“Lucy.” Garrett is beside me in no time. His hand is on my head right alongside mine. “Are you okay?”

“Yes.” No. It hurts, but I can’t think of that right now because Garrett is touching me. Sure, it’s the top of my head, but his hand on me feels good. “You startled me.”

His voice is soft, sincere. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.” He sees my shoe. “Let me get it.” His arm is long enough to retrieve my shoe.

“Now, we just have to find the other one.”

Garrett lowers himself enough to see beneath my bed. “I see it.” Lying flat on his stomach, he’s able to grasp the other one. “There.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Sitting on the floor next to Garrett, the pair of us just look at one another. That is, until he pats my knee. “We’d better get going.”

“Right.” I quickly slip my sneakers on, grab my purse, and I’m ready to go. As I lock my front door, Garrett waits behind me.

Turning, I smile. “Ready?”

“You look beautiful this morning, Lucy.”

The compliment shocks me, but I do my best to keep that to myself. “I do?”

“Green is a good color for you.”

“Thank you, Garrett. You look handsome too. I prefer you out of your suit.” And the second I realize what I said, I blush. It must be obvious, because he chuckles.

“Thank you.” He raises his arm. “Shall we?”

On the street, I look left, then right. “Where’s your car?”

“Here.” He points a large silver SUV parked at the curb.

“Where’s the brown sedan?”

“That’s my police-issued vehicle. This one is mine.”

I glance at the car, then at Garrett. “I think I like Sunday Garrett.”

He chuckles as he pulls open the passenger door for me. “I’m glad. I think I like Sunday Lucy too.”

Sliding up into the truck, I pull the seatbelt around me and latch it into place. Still standing next to my open door, Garrett says, “I know I like Sunday Lucy.”

His words catch me off guard. “You do?”

“What’s not to like?” And then my door shuts. He’s around to the driver’s side in no time. I feel like I should tell him all the things about me he might not like, but I keep my piehole shut. He’ll figure things out soon enough.

The drive over to my shop only takes a few minutes. When we pull up to the front, I glance in the single window on the front of my shop and see Molly inside. “She beat us here.”

“Is she going to hurt me?” Garrett asks with a frown.

“She’s half your size.”

“If she’s a pit bull like you say, she might bite my ankles.”

Laughter erupts from me as I pull on the door latch.

“Wait there.” Garrett jumps out of the vehicle and jogs around to my side. Opening my door, he raises his hand for me to take. I do it and that sizzle hits my palm again.

“You feel that?” he asks me in his deep voice.
