“What happened? What did Stanley say?”

Garrett’s quiet. “I had to give it back to them.”

“Why?” I sit up in my bed. “You’ve got the police report.”

“Until we can prove it was stolen, I had to return it to the Konigs.”

I feel hot tears sliding down my cheeks at a fast clip. Sniffling, I know he hears me, because he says, “Don’t cry, Lucy. I’ll help you get it back. I’ve been laying in my bed thinking about this. You need a good lawyer. One who can fight for you.”

“Garrett,” I sniffle. “That’s expensive.”

“I’ve got some money saved…”

Fresh tears slip out, “No. Absolutely not. I app-appreciate the offer, but I can’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“We just met, Garrett.”

“So. I for one feel like I’ve known you forever. No. I feel like I’ve been looking for you forever.”

And that’s it, I can’t hold them in anymore. The tears have turned to sobs.

“Honey. Please stop.”

I can’t.

“Let me in. I’m right outside your door.”

“Y-you are?”

“I am. Let me in.”

I drop the phone and run to my front door, yanking it open. The second the door is open far enough, I jump into his arms and wrap myself around him. “Thank you for coming over.”

“Come on, Lucy. You’re breaking my heart.”

“I-I’m sorry.”

Shutting and locking the door behind him, Garrett then lifts me off the ground. His arms slide beneath my knees, and he carries me to my bedroom. “Twin bed, huh?”

“It’s the only one that would fit.”

“We’ll make it work.” Garrett sets me down on the ground. Sitting on the bed, he lies on his side, scooting to the far edge. Patting the spot in front of him, I do the same until we’re spooning.

I’ve never spooned in my life. I’ve always wanted to.

His arm reaches over me; placing a palm on my stomach, he pulls me into him, so we’re tucked together just like spoons in a drawer.

“What should I do?”

“Shh. We need sleep. Tomorrow, when we’re rested, we’ll figure this out.” Garrett kisses my neck right below my ear. “Sleep.”

Funny. The second he tells me to sleep, I do. I sleep like I’ve never slept before. Like the dead.

He’s gone in the morning. I didn’t feel him get out of bed, and I didn’t hear him leave. If Molly thinks she’s a ninja, she’s got nothing on him.
