His arms wrap around my middle. “Got called out to a homicide. I did wake you. I kissed you and said I’d call or stop over when I was done. Cases like that take all day long.” He kisses the top of my head. “You were so tired; you must not have remembered the kiss.”

“No.” I smile, but he can’t see me. “I didn’t.” Turning in his arms, I push up on my tiptoes and touch my lips to his. “I’ll remember that one, though.”

“What about this one?” Garrett kisses me deep and long until I’m practically melting in his arms. My stomach ruins it by growling loudly.

“Gonna feed my woman, then I’m going to take her to bed.”

“Are you talking to yourself, Mr. Whelan?”

“Sure.” He shrugs. “I do it all the time.”

“Me too.” My tummy moans again, which makes Garrett laugh. “Let’s go eat. I’m in the mood for pizza.”

“Yeah. Pizza.”

Chapter Eleven

I’m so nervous. More nervous than I’ve ever been in my life. Today is the day the judge decides my case. I decided to follow the advice of Garrett’s friend and sue the Konigs for my property. He thought, ordinarily, the case would be pretty clear-cut, but the Konigs have friends in high places. We’ll see, though. In about an hour.

“What time is your interview with Kip Konrad tomorrow?”

Molly’s standing next to me as we wait for them to open the courtroom. I wanted to get here early in the hopes it’ll help with the nerves. My stomach has been flip-flopping like this for weeks because cases like this take forever, especially thanks to all of the delays by the Konigs and their attorneys, that is.

“Bright and early. Eight.”

“What are you going to wear?”

I love Molly so much. She’s doing her best to help me think about something else. Anything else.

“My red dress.” My favorite one.

“Your power dress.”

She’s right. I do feel powerful whenever I wear that dress.

“And where’s your fiancé?” She says the last word in a high-pitched voice. It’s true, though. We’re engaged. A month after we started dating for real, he proposed. I’m wearing his mother’s engagement ring, which I adore because he knows how I feel about handing things like this down. And last night, he did the sweetest thing. He gave me a golden locket with the letter L engraved on the top. Touching the cool heart shape on my neck, I smile, recalling his words. “Lucy, honey. No matter what happens tomorrow, I wanted you to have this locket. One from me to you so we can start our own tradition, our own destiny. Something you can pass on to our children.”

I cried so hard my eyes are still puffy from it. Not only from the gesture but because of the last two words he uttered: our children. I place my palm on my stomach. It’s fluttering from nerves, but also because I’m pregnant. I haven’t told a soul yet. I wanted to wait until after this to tell him. And he’s right, no matter what the outcome is today, my destiny lies within me and with Garrett. Honestly, if I don’t win, I’ll be okay because the locket brought me more luck, more love, and more of everything than I thought I’d ever have.

“All rise.”

Shoot. I didn’t even notice everyone filing into the courtroom. I must have been off in my own little world. I feel Garrett’s hand on top of mine. When he squeezes it, I turn and smile at him. “Good luck, honey.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“W-what?”

“You heard me, Detective Whelan. I’m pregnant.”

I’m wrapped up tight by him. “I love you so much, Lucy.” He leans back and smiles so wide. “I’m gonna be a dad?”

“You are. You’ll be a wonderful father.”

“I can’t believe this.”

“I know.” As he leans down to kiss me, the judge steps up to his spot on the bench. He sits, then hits the gavel. We sit back down and wait for his verdict.

“Before I rule on this case, I have a few things I’d like to say.”
