“Are you done playing with our time now because we have things to do,” Sylvie said before charging out in front of him, a bull ready to gore the matador. She was so confident, that Lauren almost forgot Sylvie didn’t have the list of things that still needed to be completed before inspection.

Despite whatever comments Fernando might have made in his head, he didn’t say a word as he followed Sylvie into the kitchen.

“The electrician says there’s an overload on—”

The rest of Sylvie’s sentence was swallowed up by the kitchen door swinging closed behind her.

Lauren tried to clear the hearts from her eyes before she looked over at her father. “I’d like to say she’s not usually like that, but . . . I mean . . . You’ve met her before, so . . .”

He put his arm around Lauren’s shoulders and started for the kitchen door. “Well, the girl gets shit done. I have to respect that.” He chuckled. “You’re too nice. Someone’s going to have to make sure you don’t get taken advantage of when Mami and I are dead,” he joked.

The idea of a future with Sylvie lifted Lauren off the ground. She couldn’t imagine just how much more intense Sylvie might get with age. What she would be like when she really didn’t have to hold her tongue at all.

Lauren laughed to herself. She couldn’t wait to find out.
