As they walked away, Sylvie’s father assured his wife that their thirty-two-year-old daughter hadn’t suddenly taken up smoking for the first time in her life.

Outside, Lauren took a gulp of hot summer air. They walked away from the crowd of people waiting over an hour for a table and toward Lauren’s Jeep.

“Are they ever going to get along?” Lauren asked, leaning against the front of her Jeep that had been tagged by birds squawking in the tree providing them with shade.

Sylvie stepped in, wiggling to get between Lauren’s parted legs and throw her arms around Lauren’s neck. In the sunlight, her honey eyes were incandescent.

“Honestly?” She cocked her head to the side, her face soft and luminous. “I have no idea.” Her pink lips dawned a mischievous grin. “And what I’m starting to realize is that I care less and less what anyone thinks. If they want to waste their energy fighting.” She shrugged. “That’s a whole glass of not my problem. Let’s talk about more exciting things like your new position at the top!”

Lauren circled her arms around Sylvie’s waist and pulled her in close enough for their chests to bump together. “Let’s be real. I’ve always been the top!”

Sylvie chuckled. “Pervert,” she said, before kissing Lauren in broad daylight in a very public setting.

Lauren lost herself in lush lips. Sylvie was right for once. Nothing anyone said mattered. Their parents might spend the rest of their lives bickering but Lauren didn’t care. As long as she had Sylvie, everything would be right in the world.

I love you, Sylvie. I love you so freaking much.
