As if reading her mind, Sylvie broke their kiss. Holding on to the headrest, she propped herself up. With her other hand, she pulled at the button on Lauren’s jeans.

Lauren scrambled to help. There was nothing she needed more in life than Sylvie’s touch.

A loud banging on the window made them jump. Instinctively, Lauren pulled Sylvie into her arms, using her body to protect her from the unseen threat.

“Alright, love birds come on out,” a man’s voice thundered from the other side of the fogged up window.

“Absolutely not, you perv. Leave right now or we’re calling the police!” Sylvie shouted.

“Ma’am. I am the police,” he responded in a calm, authoritative voice.

Sylvie laughed sarcastically. “Yeah, sure. You think we’re stupid? Get outta here right now. You’re not making skin suits out of us.”

“Syl, what the hell? Skin suits?” Lauren whispered before breaking out into a nervous chuckle.

Sylvie bit down on her bottom lip to keep from laughing. “Silence of the Lambs was on the other night,” she whispered.

“I’m ordering you out of the car. Are you refusing to comply with a lawful request?” He was unamused.

“Press your badge to the glass,” Sylvie demanded, still straddling Lauren as if they might be able to get back to business shortly.

For several moments, nothing happened. Then their steamed up car came alive with red and blue lights.

Sylvie looked down at Lauren, her eyes wide.

“Shit, do you think that’s really a cop?” Lauren whispered. “We’re not doing anything illegal, are we? Are we getting arrested right now?” Panic made Lauren’s muscles spasm. She’d never gotten so much as a traffic ticket.

“I’ll get us out of it,” Sylvie replied confidently.

“I don’t think your let-me-speak-to-your-manager energy is the way to go here, Syl.” She smiled. “Let me handle it.”

Sylvie glared, but remained silent.

“Okay, we’re coming out,” Lauren announced.

In response, Sylvie slid off her lap.

Before Lauren opened the door to the backseat, Sylvie grabbed her by the chin. “We can try it your way first, but if it starts going south I’m calling my lawyer.”

Lauren furrowed her brow. “Are you really such a family of vandals that you have a criminal lawyer on retainer at all times?”

Sylvie’s eyes widened. “Now is not the time for jokes, Lauren. She’s a corporate tax attorney, but still. Don’t say anything until you talk to her.”

Even in that moment, Lauren couldn’t help but be charmed by Sylvie’s penchant for the dramatic. If she wasn’t worried about the police officer waiting for them to emerge, she would’ve kissed her.

“We’re not going to prison, Syl. Your Wentworth dreams are going to have to wait a little longer, Top Dog.”

As soon as Lauren opened the door, she was met with a shockingly young man in a crisp, blue uniform that looked brand new. Behind him, his police cruiser lights were swirling in red and blue.

“Ma’am, your boyfriend is going to have to come out too,” he said before shining his enormous flashlight into the car. His slim cheeks turned pink before he cleared his throat. “Your girlfriend.”

Lauren gave him her best double-dimpled smile. “We actually haven’t had the define-the-relationship conversation yet. It’s very new.” Lauren tipped her head to the side as she reconsidered her statement. “Actually, it’s very old, but . . . I guess it’s complicated.” She laughed.

“You don’t look like working girls,” he decided upon seeing Sylvie emerge from the backseat of the Jeep. “Are you hiding from your spouses or something?” he asked, as if it was impossible to believe that two thirty-something-year-old women couldn’t have fallen to a moment of lust.

“Working girls?” Sylvie shrieked, her arms crossed over her chest. “Do you know how outdated and offensive that term is? To start with, we’re not girls. I have clothes in my closet older than you.” She stepped closer to the police officer. “And working girls is not the proper name for—”

“Okay,” Lauren stepped in front of Sylvie to stop her advance. “Listen, officer. This is our first date. We got a little carried away in the backseat, but we weren’t doing anything untoward.”
