CHAPTER31

Despite the late night,Sylvie woke up before her two in the morning alarm. She wasn’t sure she’d actually slept at all. Her body had been buzzing so loudly, it was impossible to ignore.

As she’d tossed and turned, she’d thought of Lauren. Of their kiss. Of her hands. Of how good Lauren felt beneath her fingertips . . . Of how close she’d been to touching her.

Her desire re-ignited at the memory while she brushed her teeth. She shifted her weight to redistribute the heat pulsating between her thighs.

While Sylvie shampooed her hair, she thought about the stupid cop who’d shown up to bully them. It’s not like they were having sex in a playground or something. What the hell did he care what they were doing in the backseat? He didn’t even know who was in the car or what they were doing, so how could they be offending anyone?

Sylvie stood under the rainfall stream cascading over her shoulders and rinsed the suds from her hair. She smiled at the memory of Lauren wrapping herself around her body when the knock on the window startled them.

It’s not like Sylvie needed anyone to protect her, she was more likely to fend off an attacker than Lauren, but the action had been sweet. It’s not like she’d had time to plan it. It had been Lauren’s instinct to shield her.

Sylvie’s stomach fluttered as her skin warmed even after the water was off and the cold air in the bathroom flooded her open shower. It was strange how natural it felt to be with Lauren. How she could go from such negative feelings to such overwhelming positive ones?

I should tell Regina. Sylvie laughed to herself as she towel-dried her hair. What would her godmother say if she knew what she was doing with Lauren?

I knew it! What did I tell you? That line is thin, mija. I hope you two dance all over it.

Sylvie continuously caught herself smiling as she finished getting ready. She wondered if Lauren was doing the same thing. Was she feeling the same or was she just along for the lusty make out sessions in the back of her Jeep?

A sinking feeling pulled at Sylvie and dampened the tingle in her body. What if Lauren didn’t want a real relationship with her? What if she wasn’t ready for one?

Despite Lauren’s reassurance that the relationship with her ex was over before it was officially over, Sylvie wondered if that was true. What if she changed her mind later? If she realized that she’d been wrong and needed more time to process the end of her relationship? Sylvie didn’t want to walk into something just to get hurt.

She slipped on a pair of jeans before reaching for a lavender boatneck top in her closet. Sliding into tan leather ballet slippers, Sylvie started for the vanity in her bedroom.

Pushing aside her fear of rejection until she could put the subject to Lauren, Sylvie applied a little make up. Her mind wondered to the elephant chasing her from room to room.

Should she tell Lauren about Freddie’s findings? Even if it was for everybody’s benefit, the secret strapped to her chest was getting heavy.

No.

She was doing the right thing. Why should anyone else have to suffer the shame of the truth?

After applying eyeliner and mascara, Sylvie stood. She had a lot to do before meeting Lauren for breakfast. On their own accord, her lips twitched into a smile. Just the thought of Lauren made her a weightless tangle of buzzing energy.

When Sylvie arrived at the back door of Lauren’s work in progress a few hours later, she shot her a text announcing her presence. With an enormous pink box in hand, Sylvie sauntered toward the door. A French bakery was neutral territory.

As she approached the metal door, Sylvie adjusted her sunglasses. The early morning was too bright for her sleep-starved eyes. It wasn’t doing any favors for her hair either, the summer sun pricked her skin making her sweat instantly.

“Good morning,” Lauren greeted, holding the door open.

In a loose white t-shirt with a plunging v-neck and ripped jeans, Lauren’s wavy hair fell past her eye-catching cleavage. Sylvie wondered how she always managed to look so effortlessly sexy.

“Good morning,” Sylvie echoed as she neared.

Before she could decide whether to kiss her, Lauren wrapped her arms around Sylvie’s neck.

“I missed you,” Lauren whispered, her dark eyes gleaming.

Sylvie’s instinct was to call her a liar. To throw some kind of jab. To deflect from the unnamable feeling building in her chest. How was Lauren already so comfortable with their new dynamic?

Shifting the pastry box to her hip, Sylvie decided that she would only say the wrong thing. So instead of talking, she hooked her free arm around Lauren’s waist and kissed her.

She’d missed her too, even if she didn’t know how to admit it.

Lauren’s lips parted, luring her in, urging her to deepen their kiss. Pressing Lauren against the doorframe, Sylvie fell victim to the dictates of Lauren’s body.
