CHAPTER33

Rushing across asphalt,it’s heat seeping through the thin soles of her flip flops, Lauren hurried down the residential street toward Sylvie’s parents’ house. As she did, the thrill of sneaking away turned her heartbeat into a death metal snare drum.

As soon as she saw Sylvie heading toward her on the opposite side of the street, Lauren grinned. In her leggings and t-shirt, Sylvie had no business looking so polished. Just the sight of her was a triple espresso pumped right into her chest.

“You escaped,” Lauren said as soon as she was within earshot.

Sylvie used her hand to block the sun beating down on her face. The same sun burning Lauren’s back and shoulders.

“I did,” she agreed. “Did you tell your parents where you were going?”

Lauren glanced over her shoulder toward her parents’ house. “Nope.” She wiggled her brows. “I’m on the lam.”

Sylvie grinned, an expression that rendered Lauren weightless. “We better get out of open view then.”

Lauren looked around the residential neighborhood. There was nowhere for them to go. Even the park was just a fenced in field and it was several blocks away. Too far for a surgical strike visit.

“Do you have any ideas?” Lauren tugged on the bottom of Sylvie’s shirt and pulled her in for a kiss.

Sylvie’s lips melted easily into hers. “We can’t stay out here,” she whispered before kissing her again. “This isn’t how I want to come out to our families.”

Wrapping her arms around Sylvie’s waist, Lauren smiled against her parted lips. “Could you imagine the chaos that would ensue?”

Sylvie pulled away, openly horrified by the possibility. “Bite your tongue!”

Lauren swooped in again and snuck another kiss. “Why don’t you bite it for me?”

Sylvie laughed. “Are those your moves, Machado? Seriously? It’s a wonder you’ve ever gotten a date.”

She couldn’t help loving the way Sylvie calling her by her surname brought her back to high school. To their fiery rivalry.

As Lauren smiled, she wondered if they’d invented a new love language. She couldn’t be the only person who swooned at being the target of playful jabs. There was nothing as exhilarating as bickering with Sylvie.

Entangling their fingers, Sylvie started heading back to her house. Lauren followed.

“So where are we going? You plan on sneaking me into your bedroom?” Lauren gave her warm hand a squeeze.

“Maybe if I could break into impact windows,” she joked.

As they walked, Lauren entertained the idea of role-playing that scenario. Maybe one of their parents would go on vacation soon. While Lauren was imagining a sleepover at Sylvie’s house, they stopped in front of a house with a huge for sale sign in the front yard.

“What do you think?” Sylvie’s honey eyes, ignited by the sun, were brimming with a mischievous dare.

“It’s a little soon to be buying property together, Sylvie. We haven’t even adopted a cat yet. You can’t go doing things out of order. The Lesbian Handbook is there for a reason. It creates order—”

Sylvie glared at her, but there was too much joy in her eyes to sell it. “Keep it up, Machado. You’re going to be walking back home without so much as glimpsing first base.”

Lauren scrutinized the house. It was obviously empty, but she couldn’t imagine how they were going to get in without a key.

“They moved back to Texas three months ago,” Sylvie explained, her eyebrow quirked.

“Is breaking and entering an aphrodisiac for you?” Lauren joked. “Do you know the code for the electronic lock or something?”

Sylvie rolled her eyes. “I’m not thinking about the house, Lauren.” She pointed at the fancy tree house in the un-fenced backyard. Shutters, painted pink that had faded over the years, covered each large window on every side of the square structure.

“Oh,” Lauren laughed. “I don’t know why I continue to underestimate your deviousness.”

“Shut up.” Sylvie looked around for witnesses before cutting through the grass.
