“What are we going to do?” Sylvie’s whispered question was drenched with fear.

Lauren shrugged. “What choice do we have? We tell the truth.”

The phones rang again. Staggered this time, but only by a second.

Sylvie slid up to a sitting position, prompting Lauren to hand her the shirt and bra crumpled behind her.

“And what’s the truth?” Sylvie started pulling on her bra. “It’s not like we’ve had a lot of time to sort this out.”

Lauren put her shirt back on even though it had gotten so hot and stuffy in the treehouse that she wished she could leave it off. “We can always tell them to mind their own business.”

Sylvie tossed her head back and cackled.

Lauren smiled. “Yeah, you’re right.”

Once on her feet, Lauren extended her hand to help Sylvie up. “Whatever happens, Syl. . .” She pulled her sweaty body into her arms, loving they way she fit against her. “We’re in this together, okay? We’ll deal with whatever happens as a team.”

Sylvie looked up, her honey eyes wide. “You can’t promise that when you don’t know what’s going to happen. You don’t have all the information to make a declaration like that.” Her eyes darted toward the floor like there was more she wanted to say.

Lauren pushed back a swath of light hair plastered to her forehead. “I can absolutely promise that no matter how bad the reaction from anybody, I’m not going anywhere.” She grinned. “I’m pretty sure you did some kind of black magic on me. I’m compelled to your side.”

Sylvie smiled despite the obvious worry weighing her down. “Yeah, right. That’s you who went to a Santero for some kind of spell. There’s no other reason I’m about to willingly stare down a fire-breathing dragon for you.”

“Oh come on, your mom isn’t that bad,” Lauren said with a squeeze.

“I was talking about yours.”

Lauren laughed just as her phone rang again. She pulled it out of her pocket and sighed. “That’s a lot of missed calls. I’m pretty sure each one amps the drama up at least ten percent.”

Sylvie looked at her own phone. “Oh yeah. This is going to be a whole thing.”

Before Lauren returned one of her mother’s twenty-three phone calls, before she returned to the mess that awaited them, she kissed Sylvie again.

She wasn’t that worried. Their families would be surprised, but then they’d have to get over it. It’s not like they were going to excommunicate them from the family.

Maybe this was a good thing. A chance to move on from all their old baggage. There could even be a great Campos-Machado alliance. Really . . . How bad could it be?
