“That’s what I’ve been saying my whole life. No one listens.”

“Your parents aren’t seriously considering putting him in charge of anything, are they?” Lauren recalled their previous conversation. She was seeing Sylvie’s concern with new eyes.

Sylvie sighed. “That’s my fate.” She fidgeted with the seam of Lauren’s shirt. “Speaking of fate, I better go and deal with this Pandora’s box I opened. It looks like my family is waiting for me to sort this out.”

“You didn’t do anything. Just because you’re the one who found it doesn’t mean it’s your fault. You’re just the messenger. And you know, even our grandpas were doing the best they could with what they had. Anyone who is deserving of blame is long gone.”

“I will never understand how you’re capable of putting a positive spin on everything.”

Lauren smiled. “It’s all that nut milk and vegan cheese.”

“Oh, God! Don’t make me gag!” Sylvie cried with dramatic flair.

Lauren couldn’t resist kissing her again. There was just something newly adorable about her theatrics.

When their lips parted, Sylvie embraced Lauren. “Tell me this is going to be okay.”

Lauren intertwined their fingers as they walked back to the anxiously waiting crowd. “I promise it’s going to be okay. I think you’ve given everyone something bigger to contend with than our dating. Which I have to say is pretty genius on your part.”

Sylvie laughed. “I would love to take credit for planning it that way.”

“That just goes to show what an evil genius you are. Even when you’re not trying, you’re still scheming.”

Sylvie sighed as she slowly released her grasp on Lauren’s hand. “Will I see you later then? Can I take you up on that offer for dinner or something?”

A tingle flashed in Lauren’s chest and spread over her overheated skin. “Absolutely. I’ll see you soon. Call me when you get out of the inquisition.”
