She let out a sound that was a mixture of pleasure and torment. That sound drove him on. They moved together in harmony for a few strokes. But soon their movements became faster and more urgent, until he was so close to the edge, he knew he was going to lose control.

“Daisy,” he cried out, just as he tumbled down the cliff, wave after wave crashing over him. She lifted beneath him, and he knew she was only seconds behind him. Then she threw her head backward into the pillows and let out a series of soft growls, before she went limp beneath him.

He lay on the bed, panting. Wow. So much for taking his time. But Daisy drove him crazy, and they had all night to themselves. They could do this as many times as they wanted.

He turned his head on the pillow to watch Daisy. Her hair was spread out across the bed, eyes closed, still trying to collect herself.

“My mother is going to hate you,” Daisy sighed quietly.

“What?” Where had that come from?

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to say that out loud.” She rolled her head sideways so she could look at him.

“Well, you’re going to have to explain it.”

“It’s complicated. But then, this whole thing…” she waved her arm in the air to encompass them and the bed “…is complicated.”

She wasn’t wrong about that.

“My mum wants me to marry an indigenous boy. Someone who understands our culture. She has grand plans for me. Wants me to be a beacon for our people, all that kind of shit.”

“That sounds like a lot to live up to.”

“It is.”

“And you’re saying that maybe I’ve put a spanner in her works.”

“Seems like you have,” she agreed.

He continued to stare at her. What exactly did their conversation mean? Was she saying what he thought she was saying? That she was considering making him a part of her life?

Breaking the growing silence between them, she languidly rolled over and straddled him, saying, “Talking about spanners, how long before your tool is ready for action again?”

“My what?” he sputtered. “My tool? Why would you call it that?” He reached for her ticklish spot, and she dissolved into a fit of giggles on his chest. “I’ll show you exactly what my tool can do,” he said, lifting her chin with his thumb and kissing her.

An hour later, Dale lay on the pillow and groaned. Daisy was going to kill him. But it’d be worth it. He closed his eyes and sighed, and Daisy did the same, settling into his shoulder. Suddenly the peaceful air was broken by a loud buzzing noise. What was that sound? Dale opened his eyes. He didn’t want anything or anyone interrupting this perfect bubble of happiness surrounding the two of them. But the annoying sound kept going, and he propped himself up on his elbow.

“Oh, shit.” Abruptly, Daisy leapt out of bed. “That’s my phone.” She fumbled in the dark through the pile of clothes that she’d left on the floor.

Daisy was suddenly silhouetted against the starlight from the window as she stood up, phone held to her ear. She was completely naked, and her curves were outlined against the stars. He held his breath. It could only be one person calling Daisy at this time of night.

“Hello? River, is that you?”

He couldn’t hear the other person’s reply, but Daisy gave a loud exhalation of relief and Dale knew it was her brother.

“Where are you? What—” She cut off her questions and listened intently.

“Yes, I know the place you mean,” she replied. Then there was more silence as she listened once more to what River had to say.

What place? Where was River? It was exceedingly frustrating only being able to hear one side of the conversation, and he wished Daisy would put her brother on speaker.

“Yes, I can come now.” Daisy glanced in Dale’s direction and then quickly ducked her head and turned away. He frowned. If she thought she was going anywhere without him, she’d better think again. “But do you really think this guy is—”

What guy was River talking about? And where did River want Daisy to go? Dale got out of bed and began to quietly get dressed. Not knowing what was going on was driving him mad.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. You should wait for me to get there.” Daisy raised her voice, obviously upset about whatever River was suggesting. And also, obviously thinking she was going alone. He put a hand on her shoulder, and she flinched, as if only just remembering he was there.

“River, wait… Oh, fuck.” She held the phone out and stared at it. “The fucker hung up on me,” she said, finally looking at him.
