His face fell ever so slightly. “Yeah, I had a call from Lefty this morning. He, ah…”

This didn’t sound like good news. Kee put her cup down slowly and stared at him.

“It was the fuel pump, like we thought.”

Like he’d thought. She hadn’t had a clue what was wrong with her own car.

“Lefty doesn’t have one for your model vehicle in stock, so he’s ordered one from Sydney.” Wazza hesitated. “But it could take up to a week to get here.” He winced as he noticed her frown. “Sorry, there’s not a lot we can do. I asked if he could put an urgent request in, and he said he already had.”

Kee dropped her gaze to the tabletop, her hand going to cover her heart, which was beating erratically.

“The cookies are yummy. Can I have another one, please?” Benni asked, unaware of the tense silence that’d fallen around the table.

“Mummy? Can I?”

Kee didn’t answer; couldn’t answer. This was terrible news. Horrible. The worst. What was she going to do for a whole week? She needed to be moving on. A week in one place might give Bruno the time he needed to track her down.

“I can’t stay here that long,” she said, hating the sudden wobble in her chin. “I need to leave, or he’ll find us.”
