“It can’t have been that easy,” I say softly, almost reaching across the table to grab his hand. I stop myself just in time, his sudden laugh snapping me to my senses.

“Hell no! It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done! I was sure killing myself was the only solution, but that was just my youth and my ignorance. I’ve met some great people that helped me along the way. It turned out to be a lot of fun.”

“Fun?”

“Yea, I learned a lot.”

I wrap my arms around myself shaking my head at the very idea of venturing into something so terrifying. He didn’t come out of it unscathed, but I can tell he loves what he does. I’ve always heard how opposite investors think from the rest of humanity. Maybe his brain is just wired differently, because he definitely sounds insane.

I take a deep breath, my mind reeling as I try to steady myself and focus on the questions I actually wrote down instead of the direction the conversation is going. This is an interview, not a date. Though, one question burns in my mind, and I just can’t help myself.

“You said you were with someone at the time?” I ask.

“Yes I was. My girlfriend at the time was– well I won’t say her name, but we’d been together for five years when it all happened.”

“Did she help you?” I notice something flash in his eyes right before he looks away, a tick in his jaw.

“She couldn’t really handle the pressure, understandably of course. We broke up because of it.”

“That sucks. After so long together,” I mutter.

“It was a lot of money,” he replies.

I nod, staring at my notebook. It’s still blank except for the questions I wrote down to ask last night. The only one I’ve been able to stick to is the first one. Seeing the black ink of my swirly handwriting snaps me back to the matter at hand. I exhale and ask my next question.
