Instead of starting practice right away, Gigi called everyone over.

“Circle of friends!” she shouted out and everyone looked at me. “I know we’ve all spoken to Lexi separately. Now, I think we need to gather as a group and reaffirm how much she means to this team.”

Gianna skated right up to me. “You’re tough as nails, Hunter. You showed up every day, no matter what got thrown at you. I admit to doubting you—and I feel like crap. I’m sorry for that, and I’ve got your back from now on. I give you my word.” She patted my arm as she went by.

One by one, my teammates stepped up and apologized, then said really, really kind things. By the end, we were all in tears.

Jillian was the last to glide up. Before she could talk, I did. “Thanks for sticking by me, Jillybean. It meant everything to know you still liked me. No matter what. And I’m sorry for screwing up your social media stuff. I hope it didn’t affect your business too badly.”

Jillian smiled at me. “Lexi, I love you to bits, and I always will. And business is just fine. In fact, I designed a new pink bikini just for you. It's got the cutest ruffles on it. It’s so cute, you’re gonna die.”

Gosh.

That was Jillian.

Always kind.

Always giving.

Always there.

“Thanks, I owe you so much already. I don’t know how I’ll ever pay you back.”

She laughed and skated backward away from me. “No payback required, my friend.”

After that, we started practice.

And it was the best one I’d ever had.
