They quickly deposited him on my couch, then left with parting laughter.

The only one who wasn’t laughing was me.

And the puppy.

She wanted out of my arms and to go see her daddy.

I set Hayley down, and she raced to his feet. She whined for his attention.

“Aww, commere.” Trey reached down to pet her, but he lost his balance.

The idiot lost his balance from a sitting position.

He tried to stop himself. Instead, he fell forward in slow motion.

It was pretty freaking pathetic to watch.

And I’d seen plenty of pathetic before.

Part of me wanted to rush over to him and attempt to help him.

To break his fall somehow.

I was strong.

I could at least assist.

But—I wasn’t going to.

The puppy backed up and howled at Trey as he toppled over.

“For fuck sakes,” he swore after landing on the floor. His hand went up and he tried to push himself to stand.

Wow.

The way he struggled was even more pathetic than watching him fall.

“Lex, some help here, please?” He waved his hand at me and called me over.

“Looks like you’re doing great on your own there, big fella.” I grabbed a pillow off the chair and tossed it to him. Then I pulled the fuzzy throw off the couch.

“Have a good sleep.” The blanket sailed in the air. Trey’s reaction time was so slow it landed on his face before he knew it.

I called the puppy—the very awake puppy—to come outside with me.

It had taken me forever to get her to sleep, and now she was hyper as ever jumping on Trey to get his attention.

However, I had treats.

“Come here, baby,” I called to her. When Hayley finally listened, I took her outside.

Mostly, she wanted to play.

Mostly, I wanted to sleep.

Our goals at this point in time were incompatible.

Much like my marriage right now.
