I followed slowly behind Lexi and took in what I could of the house as we went.

Wes had spent some serious money in here.

The living room furniture was top notch, and everything in here was decorated to the teeth.

The kitchen was off the living room, and from first glance, it looked like he had top of the line everything in there.

The already loud music got even louder as we walked around the corner and through the huge dining room.

Far to the left, there was a sunken family room. Lexi hustled down the few steps and into the darkened room. “Daddy,” she said in competition with the screaming noise coming from the speakers.

My eyes finally focused on a figure on the couch.

Wes.

He was hunched over, a cigarette in his right hand, and his greasy head was bouncing to a beat that only he could hear.

Lexi shut the music off—and turned to her father.

He finally looked up. “Why’d ya turn it off?” he said in a broken, choppy, drunken tone.

Christ.

He was a fucking wreck.

Lexi shook her head and strode up to her father. “Daddy, why? Why now? Hmm?”

Wes chuckled, then burst out into sardonic laughter. “You know why, baby girl. Your old man is a fucking useless wretch.”

Her shoulders slumped, then she kneeled down by his legs. “You’re not. You were in a really good place. Why now?”

His laughter trailed off. “Because I fuck up everything good in my life, Alexis. You knew it would happen eventually. It always does.”

She laid her head down on his knee. “No, you’re a good man, Daddy. Everyone knows that—” she lifted her head, “except you. How much of this have you taken today?” Lexi jerked her head toward the coffee table.

Holy shit.

It was covered with pill bottles, wine bottles, and beer bottles.

Cigarette packages, ashtrays, and weed.

A few open pizza boxes sat on the couch and the floor.

Good, God.

It really was a disaster.

“As much as I needed,” Wes replied, then he began laughing all over again.

Christ.

Lexi stood and caught my eye. “Happy you came, now?” she said sarcastically.

I moved down the steps toward her.

Her head shook slightly, and she waved her hand at the coffee table. “You ready to party? I’m sure he’d love the company. He’ll share his pills with you. Knock yourself out.”

I opened my mouth, slightly in shock at her words. “You can’t honestly compare my medication use to—” I jerked my head to the coffee table, “that.”
