the whole time, especially when he doesn’t say a word. This is why I’m here; this is what I’m owed, and I’m terrified I will be rejected right now.

He closes the book and looks up at me. “McKinely, let me take this book and show it to Kallie.”

Excitement bubbles up inside me, but I don’t want to come off as greedy, so I shake my head. “No, that’s not why I showed you. Plus, it isn’t that great.”

“I know that isn’t why you showed me, but what did I just tell you earlier? If there is something I can do to help you, I will do it. This is something I can do and do well. I have tons of connections, but none better than Kallie. Let her take a look and see what she says,” he pleads, holding the book closer to his chest.

“Alright, I guess so. I mean I don’t know what to say. Thank you for wanting to help me with this.” He kisses the top of my head as he stands up.

“That’s what brothers are for. Also, I know you need a job. Luckily for you, I have connections all over. London is the manager at a restaurant, and she told me she’d hire you as a waitress. You start on Monday. I’ll show you tomorrow where it is.”

How is this real life? I mean no one has helped me before and in the last three minutes, Blake has given me a job and offered to help get me in with Kallie. It’s surreal.

I wrap my arms around him, and he hugs me back. “Thank you, Blake. I’m so lucky to have you as my brother.”

“Yes, you are.” We both laugh and he stops suddenly looking at me in all seriousness. “I have a lifetime of my father’s mistakes to make up for and I will do everything in my power to do that for you.”

With that, he drops his cell number on the counter along with the keys to this palace and leaves.

I stand in shock for a moment before I look around.

“Holy fuck this is happening. It is all actually happening,” I scream and spin around in circles. My life has finally taken a turn down the right track and I sure as hell will do everything I can to keep it from derailing.

Chapter 6

Braden

* * *

It’s been a week since the girls left and I finally took up Kallie’s offer for dinner. As much as I want to sit at home and feel sorry for myself, I can’t. It was my decision to move back to California, so I can’t blame Sarah for that one. I just miss them so much when they leave, I forget for a few days how to do things without them.

I park my truck, grab the wine I brought and head up to Kallie’s apartment. I knock and wait for her to answer.

“Braden, I’m so glad to finally see you.” She wraps her arms around me and I smile knowing my sister loves me just as much as I love her.

“I’m happy to see you too. Smells awesome in here.” I put the wine on the counter and lean against it.

“Thanks. I invited mom too. She should be here shortly.”

My poor mom has been so worried about me, I need to let her know I’m doing fine.

“Thanks Kallie. Where is Jax?”

She pours herself a glass of wine before handing me a beer out of the fridge. “Let’s sit, my feet hurt.” I follow her to the couch and we both take a sip of our drinks. “He is in Arizona for a shoot until next weekend.” I don’t know how they do it. They are separated so much of the time, but damn they make it work. “Anyway, before mom gets here. I was talking to her the other night and she told me that she had dinner with some guy she met at work.”

This is a total shock. My mother hasn’t been on a date, well ever. At least not that I know of. “You’re kidding. How the hell did that happen?”

She laughs and takes another sip of wine. “No idea. When I tried asking her, she got annoyed.” We both laugh and I’m happy for my mom. She deserves to be with someone, and he must be a great guy to have gained her attention.

The three of us are sitting on the couch, stuffed with the roast that Kallie made. It’s been such a great night, exactly what I needed. My mom was happy to see me back to myself and it felt like we were kids again having dinner with her.

“I love you both, but I need to get going. I am going to the movies.” She gets off the couch and Kallie and I grin at each other.

“Who are you going to the movies with Mom?” I ask.

“Just a few people from work. Come give me a hug.” We both hold back our laughs and say our goodbyes.

Once the door closes, we both burst out laughing. “Mom’s got a booty call,” Kallie yells, which makes me want to puke.
