“Mel, don’t be embarrassed. I love that you just blurt out what you are thinking. I would love to make you breakfast, but how about dinner first?” I finally get myself under control.

“That sounds great.” He gets out of the car and opens my door. We walk up to the door hand in hand. Once we are on the porch, I look at him. “Would you like to come in for a little bit?” Sounds like a line you’d hear in a movie. I’m such a tool.

“You have no idea how much I’d love that.” I can tell that’s not the end of it; he’s definitely got more to say.

“But . . .” He smiles at me.

“But, I don’t think it’s a good idea tonight. Even though I

will regret it the minute you close that door, I know on our first date it is the right thing to do.” I shake my head and giggle.

“Such the gentleman.” He brings my hand up to his mouth and kisses the back of it.

“Damn right, I am.” He winks that panty-soaking wink, and I laugh.

“I had a great time tonight. Thank you for everything.”

“I did too, Mel. I’ll see you tomorrow. Sweet dreams, sweetheart.” He walks down the steps, and I watch him. He turns and raises an eyebrow. “Get in the house.” I giggle, but do as I am told. Once inside, I look back out, and he is already climbing in the car. I close the door and make my way to my room, thinking this has been one of the most incredible nights ever, and it only ended with a kiss on my hand.

When I get out of the shower in the morning, I quickly get dressed in a pair of black dress pants and a light gray button-down blouse. I blow dry my hair straight and put on my makeup. Satisfied, I step out of the bathroom and scream when Connie is standing there with a smug smile on her face. “Fuck, Connie, you scared the shit out of me.” She follows me to my room and plops down on my bed.

“How was dinner?” I can’t help the smile that finds its way to my face. “Oh, my God, that good huh?” I laugh and shake my head.

“We had a very nice time.” I grab my shoes out of the closet and step into them.

“Seriously? That’s all I get? I’m your best friend, Mel. We tell each other everything. It had to be better than ‘nice’ because I got a text last night telling me to make myself disappear tonight.” I throw my pillow at her and stand up.

“It’s your brother, Connie. How much do you want to hear? We had a great time, the best time. I’ve never been so attracted to someone. Felt such a connection. I would have loved for him to throw me on this bed and fuck me until morning.” She laughs and shakes her head.

“Yea, okay. There might be something to you not telling me everything. He told me pretty much the same thing about you, well, minus the fucking part.” I’m buckling on my watch and smile, thinking he talked to her about me. “So, anyway, I told him I would hang out at my mom’s tonight. I’ll pack a bag and everything, so you’ll have the entire night. Just remember this when I want a favor.” I hug her and kiss her cheek.

“You’ve got it.” I check my watch and realize I need to haul ass. “As much as I’d love to continue this conversation, I need to get my ass to work. Wait, why aren’t you ready?” She smiles and lies back on my bed.

“My big brother told me to take the day off so we could do something. Not one to argue, I called out first thing this morning.”

“Well, you lucky bitch, have fun. I’ve really got to go.” I rush out of my room, grab my purse, and head out to work.

“Thompson.” I look up from my computer and see one of my least favorite cops. Jenson is such a conceited prick. I fucking hate working with him. He’s not even good looking, but he thinks that because he wears a uniform, he is hot shit.

“What’s up?” He grins at me, and it makes me want to punch him in the mouth.

“I have a girl coming whose house got broken into, and she is going to give you a description.” I look at my watch and see that it is almost time for me to leave, but I’d never leave without helping her first.

“Okay. When do you expect her?” He pulls up a chair, sits down, and props his feet up on my desk. I look at him with my eyebrows raised, but he just smiles.

“I don’t know. I figure in the hour.” This asshole. He must know I have plans tonight, so he’s doing this on purpose.

“Jenson, is someone really coming in? If not, I’m leaving.” He leans back in the chair and sighs.

“Mel, you know as well as I do that you won’t leave until you’ve helped every lost soul.” Fuck, he’s right I won’t leave. Not with the thought of a woman who feels unsafe because some asshole is out there. Jenson drops his feet quickly and straightens up. I look behind me and see the captain is coming.

“Jenson, Thompson, what the hell are you two still doing here?” That fucking lying prick. He looks at me with pleading eyes, and I mentally flip him off.

“Captain, Jenson said I had someone coming in because her home was broken into.” I give him a smug smile, and I can see him sweating.

“Jenson, get your ass into my office. Thompson, have a good night. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I pack up my things, and Jenson looks back at me. I smile and flip him off. He does this shit all the time, not only with me, but also with all the female workers. He’s been written up more times than some criminals have been arrested, but his dad is the mayor, so it’s always brushed under the carpet.

I rush out of there and get into my blue Chevy Impala. As soon as I start it, my cell phone rings. I grab it out of my purse and hit talk while throwing the car in drive. “Hello?”
