Color tinged Jace’s high cheekbones, but there was no anger in his expression. Just intense emotion.

“Is that everything, sweetheart?”

“Yes, plus I cried for you every day you were in the hospital. I can’t…I just can’t. I can’t believe this all happened. It’s like a nightmare.”

“Surely not every day,” he said, smiling then. I smiled back, lifting my shoulders to indicate I was finished.

“It’s your turn,” I said. “No secrets. No lies.”

“No secrets, no lies, huh?” he echoed, running his hand through his thick, dark hair. “In that case, I’ll start by saying you look fucking amazing in that dress. In everything you wear. And I can’t wait to replace everything you owned and see it hanging up in my closet next to my stuff. I can’t wait to run my hands down your dresses every morning as I’m reaching for a shirt and tie and imagine all the ways I ran my hands down your body the night before. You are worthy. You’re worthy of so much more than me.”

I inhaled sharply, shaking my head but unwilling to interrupt him.

“Greer. Sweetheart. We’ve had a fucking…helluva time. But I’ve had a lot of time to think in the past few weeks, even before the fire. I was an asshole. I’m angry. I’m angry all the time. And I’m going to get help.”

He hooked his long finger in the bodice of my dress and drew me toward him, so we were nose-to-nose.

“I’m not sorry you came back,” he said emphatically. “I’m not sorry I’m so easily seduced by you. I’m not sorry you’ve had your struggles—they’ve made you who you are. I love you. I fucking love you. I loved you on that rooftop when I thought we were going to die, and I love you right now. I’m thankful—thankful you saved us both. And you’re welcome for helping you find the truth about your father and for getting the murder charges dropped. Although, with the house gone, we’ll need to renegotiate my fee.”

“What do you want?” I asked shakily, peace settling into my bones at his words.

“Isn’t it obvious by now? I just want you.”
