CHAPTER12

Breakfast was a somber affair.

Cygny didn’t feel like eating much, but Leo cut some fruit and set it on a plate for her. There was a chef preparing omelets and other preparations of eggs at a sideboard along the windows and Leo got one for both of them. When he sat down beside her, she felt the concern rolling off him in waves.

“I’m fine.” Her softly spoken comment sounded wooden in her own ears. “I think it’s the windows.”

She lifted her chin in their direction and Leo nodded. “I feel like we’re still in the suburban.”

Cygny had to smile at his comment.

One of the other buyers sat down across the narrow table from them and looked over their plates. “I was wondering if it was safe to eat.”

Cygny chanced a small smile at him. “Freshly prepared.”

The man looked down at the fried eggs in front of him and the sausages beside them. “I was just thinking that. The eggs look more appetizing anyway.”

Cygny busied herself with a bite of her omelet and nodded at the man.

Beside her, Leo had left his fork and knife on the napkin that the servers had provided, keeping his hands free.

The gentleman across the way gave him a measuring look before returning to his study of her. “I thought I knew everyone in the game.” He managed to speak around a bite, his words clear, his attention focused on her face. “It is a rather insular group.”

“You’d be surprised what comes out of the woodwork on occasion.” She shrugged and took a sip of her water.

“Hmm.” He nodded and leaned against the edge of the table. “Even more of an oddity to see a woman in the group.”

“What’s wrong with a woman?”

Cygny was surprised at Leo’s question.

If she wasn’t playing her part, she might have kissed him senseless for the heavy-handed defense.

“Oh, nothing.” The other man sat back in his chair as he looked between them searching for answers she wasn’t willing to give. “I just find it curious. Men with stupid amounts of money don’t usually like to have women tell them how to spend it.”

Cygny’s brows raised at the honest comment. “Then, I guess my boss is rich and intelligent. He trusts me implicitly.”

He nodded and took a sip of his coffee, his eyes never leaving her face. “You know,” he began, and set his mug down on the tabletop, “you have balls. I like that.”

Leo shifted on his chair and the man leaned closer to the table. “Your muscle is getting antsy.”

She spared Leo a glance before leaning in, mirroring the other man’s posture. “My muscle is doing his job.”

Leo’s mouth quirked up on the side of his mouth only she could see.

Deciding that she’d had enough of the man’s curiosity, Cygny stood up and gave him a nod. She looked at Leo. “Mister Burke?”

He stood and adjusted his suit coat as he put himself between Cygny and the table to watch her back.

“Yes, Miss?”

“I’d like to go back to our room please.”

Leo saw the way the other man’s eyes widened slightly and Leo couldn’t help the sly smile that touched his own lips.

“My pleasure, Miss.”

When she left the room, she put a little extra swing in her step and felt a feminine smile curve her lips.

When they reached the hall, she felt Leo’s palm flatten against her lower back.

Heat curled through her at the simple touch.

“How do you plan to watch my back when you’re this close, Mister Burke?” She knew he’d bristled at the way Helena had addressed him and she wanted to keep him on his toes.

He opened the door to their room and led her inside.

As soon as the door closed behind them, he had her up against the wall, his muscular body pressed up against her back, one hand braced against the wall, the other, pulling her hair away from her neck.

Leaning in, he kissed her neck and the change in his posture pressed the hard line of his cock against her lower back. He closed his teeth on her earlobe, and she hissed out a breath.

“I’ve got your six, Cygny. Never doubt that.”

She closed her eyes and pressed back against him. “And when we get back to Fool’s Gold,” she smiled when she heard him growl in her ear, “we’ll have to try this again, without all these clothes.”

“Baby, you kill me.”

He took a step back to put distance between them and when she turned around, they were both visibly turned on.

“And I’m going to prove,” she lifted her chin to meet his gaze straight on, “that I’ve got your six, too.”
