On the next ridge over,Roman and Beck sat in their vehicle, hidden behind a well-constructed blind. Beck set her scope down on the console between them and frowned at her partner. “You see anything?”

Roman turned his head enough to meet her gaze for a moment before he turned back. “Not a thing.”

“I don’t like this.”

He reached over and took her hand in his, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “We’ve got their backs.”

“On the next ridge over!” Her head dropped back on a groan. “We can’t look in through the windows. Swede says he can’t find any electronic signals he can hack into. If Victoria hadn’t seen them entering the grounds, we wouldn’t even know they’re in there.”

Beck’s cell buzzed and she chanced a look down at the screen.

“What is it?”

She exhaled loudly at Roman’s question. “Agent Marks. He wants an update.”

“Well, so do we.” Roman’s snark made her smile.

“I love you.”

He leaned in for a quick, hot, kiss before returning to his binoculars. “I love you, too.”

Helena enteredher father’s office and quietly walked up to his desk.

When he didn’t acknowledge her, she gathered her courage and spoke. “Father?”

She felt the room go cold a moment later and when her father turned to look at her, his eyes promised pain.

Helena felt her knees shake but she continued on. Her need to know overcame her fear. “When will this be over? They think the auction is tomorrow, but that can’t be all that you’re planning.”

His brow arched over his eye as he leaned casually on the edge of the desk. “What I’m planning is just that. My plan. You will be expected to follow instructions. When you are asked to prove yourself to me. You will.”

“Of course.” She shook her head. “I love you. I’d do anything for you.”

Smiling, he sat back in his chair and waved her off toward the door. “Then be a good little girl and leave me. I have plans to make.”

Helena waited just a moment and watched him turn back to his computer. With a tap of his finger, the monitor flared to life.

She recognized the room in the security camera.

It was her.

And her man by her bedside, holding her hand.

Helena felt hate coursing through her veins as she turned away. Hate burned hot enough to shake the cold from her skin. She left the room and closed the door behind her.

Standing there alone in the hallway she let out a shuddering breath.

Helena couldn’t wait for her father to get his revenge on her.

It had taken Helena a fortune to find where she had gone after leaving Homeland Security. It had taken even more to find out her name.

Cygny Devoy.

What a waste of letters. Of life.

When her father destroyed Cygny, she would celebrate. Maybe he’d let her have a little fun before she died? Cause a little pain of her own?

Yes. That’s what she wanted. After she’d spent her whole life desperate for her father to give her the kind of love she desired, she wasn’t going to let Cygny share in any of it.

It was just her luck that Cygny had fallen for the military man her father had targeted and framed.

Helena lifted her chin in pride and went off to her room.

She knew how to do what she was told.

She knew not to question what her father told her to do.

Cygny was worthless to him. And her father knew it.
