“Good.” She grinned into a kiss until Tommy called them back.

They followed him to the room where her mother, father, and Zoe were seated on either side of Shelley, all three staring at the baby in Shelley’s arms. Congratulations were given, and Chris passed out their gifts. Zoe tore right into the chocolate, the candy evidently better than her baby brother.

Shelley held Mason out to Bronte. “Want to hold him?”

She cradled him in the crook of her arm, touching his copper-colored peach fuzz. “Happy birthday,” she whispered, soaking him up, his nose and the twitch of his lip. “He looks like you, Dad,” she said, angling her arms so her father could see, then to Chris for confirmation. “Doesn’t he?”

“Yeah, he does.”

She held out her arms. “Want to take him for a bit?”

“No, that’s okay. Someone else could hold him.”

“Go ahead, Chris,” Steven said.

“I’ve…” He cleared his throat with a cringe. “I’ve never held a baby before.”

Bronte only smiled, gently positioning Mason in his arms. “Now you have. Not so bad, right?”

Shelley snatched up her cell phone. “I have to get a picture of this. It’ll sell for millions.”

Bronte was ready to pounce on her, seeing how they’d just talked about such pictures, but Chris only held Mason closer, swaying instinctively in that way people did when they held babies, his face exuding wonder as he stared down at the newborn. “It might. Or maybe it’ll make this handsome guy a star.”
