I turned back to the rows of grapes behind us, falling in waves as they led my eyes down the hill. “Yes, and I’m so relieved. Thank you for bringing me back.”

“Your wish is my command.” He repeated the same words he’d used before. “Where do you want to go now? Since we’re back in Italy, would you like to see Lake Garda? It’s considered one of the most beautiful places in the country. Or perhaps Positano on the Amalfi Coast? Or how about the Island of Capri or Venice or Sorrento on the Bay of Naples? Or we could pay a quick visit to Rome. What do you think?”

I thought my head might explode from all the choices, once again overwhelmed despite my best efforts. “If it’s all right with you, I’d like to go down into town. Maybe see that special clock in the Duomo of Florence?”

Roarke stood still with his head cocked as if listening to the wind. “Actually, I don’t like to visit the same area twice within such close timing. So it would probably be best if we picked another place.”

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as a waft of charred wood drifted to my nose. I wondered then just whose dream this was. If Roarke himself was shaping the scene, it meant he was purposely lying to me.

I took one last look at the villa, pinpointing smoke rising from a chimney and inhaled deeply. Catching the aroma of food being cooked, I closed my eyes and let my magic rise to the surface, searching for the truth. I wasn’t entirely sure if what I was seeing was real or not, but regardless, Roarke had brought me here, exactly like I asked. And for now… that was enough.

I placed my hand in his, my heart and mind again somewhat at ease.
