The last time I tried, I ended up right outside Roarke’s cabin, but tonight I was determined to do this on my own.

With my snack left behind on the side table, I rushed to my altar and lit the smudge stick lying in my abalone shell.

God and Goddess, cleanse any negative energy from me so that I may only be filled with love and light.

I wafted the smoke up and down my body, making sure to encircle my head and feet. Grabbing a chunk of blue lace agate, I walked to my bed, excited and confident. I could do this. Lying down, I repeated my previous spell while picturing the jungle in my mind’s eye.

Goddess of night, hear my plea. Shroud me from the one who sees. Let me walk within my dreams, shielded and alone. So mote it be.

Cool water lapped at my toes, and I woke to the glowing colors of the jungle again. The waterfall rained down just as before, creating a mesmerizing light show as its force churned the surface of the pond.

I looked around, expecting to see Roarke appear, but so far, I was alone.

Smiling wide, I waded in, my one-piece swimsuit already back in place. Sinking up to my chin, I paddled out to the middle, then rolled over and floated on my back. Bright blue and yellow macaws flew overhead, their loud squawks penetrating my ears even below the waterline.

Tiny bubbles tickled my skin as I moved my arms back and forth. Trails of silver light shimmered all around my body—the Weaver’s magic present in the dreamscape even when he wasn’t around.

Closing my eyes, I let the cacophony of jungle sounds lull me back to my center. Floating weightlessly, I was reminded of all the summers Mama and I spent at the small river that cut through the woods behind our house. In places, it was deep enough I could lift my feet, and together we’d spent hours drifting along with the current.

“Milly, whenever you find yourself lost, just return to the water. Its properties can heal even the deepest scars.”

At the time, I didn’t understand what she meant, but now I knew she was talking about my heart.
