Page 71 of Not Kissing Nick

Forty-Four

Another week went by, and then another. Nick wasn’t quite sure how it was happening. Life hadn’t passed this quickly before the kids.

Before Robin.

He was almost certain that woman was avoiding him. Maybe he’d come on a little too strong lately. But damn, did he want that woman.

That was the main reason he had the kids up again the second Sunday after Nikki’s wedding—three weekends before Phil’s—and dressed in their church clothes.

He was going Robin hunting.

They were headed to Phil’s after church again—it was becoming a Sunday routine. One the kids seemed to love.

Robin was planning to spend the entire day out there, too.

She and Glenna and Phil’s daughters were hard at work planning Phil’s wedding.

Glenna was starting to freak out—Phil was threatening to just sling her over his shoulder and carry her off to the nearest justice of the peace and have a reception later.

Perci and Phoebe had just about gone through the roof after that.

Phil had told his woman he didn’t care how he got her—he just wanted her forever. Nick could understand that.

“Kids, we have ten minutes until Robin will be here!” he yelled. “Let’s roll.”

Nova was still in the bathroom, brushing her hair. She was determined to learn how to braid her hair by herself.

It was a long process.

Noah was waiting downstairs, cranky that Nick was making him go—even though he actually had admitted he liked the youth group and the kids he’d met.

Nick thought church was best for Noah overall. He had made a few friends there. They were moving forward.

All of them.

But it had taken some serious convincing to get Robin to give him and the kids a lift today. He’d known what she was doing—and she’d known what he was up to.

This was a game they were engaged in.

And they both knew it.

He was going to get the woman he wanted. It was just a matter of time. Nick just kept whistling as he combed his hair, and plotted exactly how he was going to get Robin Patton alone today, too.

Nick had a particular look in his eyes when he looked at her from the passenger seat. One that said she wouldn’t be safe—even at church, with their family surrounding her.

She shivered.

He was hunting her. Robin wasn’t stupid. Nick had called her every night before bed, just to…have adult conversation, he’d said.

Well, his version of adult conversation was a little spicier than hers, that was for sure. Some of the things he said to her after the kids were asleep at night would have her cheeks flaming for days.

No man had ever spoken to her quite the way he did, in her entire life.

Each morning, after she dropped the boys off at school, she—and Becky, who was a regular fixture in the office now—would find Nick waiting for them. Usually with a snack for Becky and a hug for her daughter.

Robin somehow got nabbed and kissed so thoroughly it took her a good half hour to get her brains back in gear as she got going on her daily routine.

It was just too easy.

Robin had never trusted easy. Not for a minute.

“Hi,” he said after he made certain Nova was fastened into her booster seat in the back. Robin had bought a second one for his daughter, to keep in her van. “You look gorgeous. I’m going to catch you the first chance I can get today.”

“Get in. We’re already running late.” And she would stay there gawking at him all day if she could.

Robin was totally gone over this man. No sense in denying it—to herself, anyway.

Trouble. The man was pure trouble, and always would be.
