ADONE

We followed Tumbles down the side of a hill and up another. At each peak, I looked around, hoping to see a body of water in the vicinity, but there was nothing in sight.

So far, we hadn’t seen any indication more scoopeens were around, but they could be almost anywhere. I needed to locate a weapon, but we hadn’t come across anything worthy. Perhaps a tree branch? I’d break one off if we passed a scruffy tree.

“We have two challenges,” I said.

The monitors continued to track us, flying a distance above.

Summer walked easily beside me, periodically shooting me a smile. “Find the water, and make it disappear. I’m worried about the second half of that. Sure, the first bit, but there must be water here or we wouldn’t be tasked to find it.”

“If that’s true, then there must be a way to make it disappear.”

“We need to look at it from all angles. Disappear could mean something other than pop, and it’s gone from our sight.”

“You’re right.”

“So, say we came across a glass of water,” she said. “Boy, would I love a glass of water right now.”

“I wish I could find you this glass of water.”

“Or iced tea. While you’re playing bartender, how about a cold beer fresh from the tap? I’m not even picky if it’s domestic or imported.”

“I will pour it as soon as possible,” I said, going along with her joke. “I do see where you’re going with this. If you drank the water, it would disappear.”

“Exactly.” She frowned. “If it was a pool of water, we might be able to drain it through a hole in the bottom, assuming we found a plug we could pull.”

“Or divert it into another area where it is hidden.”

“What else could we do? I doubt we’ll find a body of water as big as the ocean, and frankly, I wouldn’t seek it out if I saw it, because there’s no way we could make that disappear.”

“It would prove a challenge.”

“Hmm.” She peered up at the sky as we slogged along a long stretch of sand, our feet digging into the soft soil. Tumbles rolled ahead of us, stopping to make sure we followed. “If we could make it rain then stop, the water would evaporate. That would make it disappear too.”

“You’re right.” I also peered up at the sky, but there were no clouds or rain in sight.

“What else?”

“I’m not sure.”

We walked silently, thinking. I was enjoying being with this female. Her humor kept me happy, and her determination made me admire her greatly.

Her softly rounded body was appealing to watch. I wanted to hold her. Kiss her. I wasn’t sure how to go about doing something like that.

“I’ve never kissed anyone before,” I blurted out.

Summer stopped at the top of a low hill. Tumbles continued to roll down to the base. “You haven’t kissed anyone?”

“Bahros told us many ways to pleasure a female, but I met few females, and there was never an opportunity to test his lessons.”

“Lessons . . .” Her lips quirked up before smoothing. “There’s a story here.”

I waved for us to continue following Tumbles. How long would we do so before deciding the creature was only meandering through the desert and had no destination in mind?

“Bahros was captured when he was twelve,” I said.

“You were much younger.”
