ADONE

“You have done it,” someone said, and we broke apart.

Summer slid down my body, and I wanted to groan. But I would not do so while someone watched us.

“You found water, and you made it disappear,” Burmoot said. “Congratulations! You’ve completed your first task.”

So simple. If only we’d thought of it sooner.

“I cry all the time,” Summer said through new tears. “Though I’m parched, so it’s a surprise I had any tears left.” She leaned against me. “Adone did this for me. He makes everything perfect. We did it together.”

Burmoot smiled. “He is special, isn’t he?”

An odd thing to say. “Why are you being friendly with us?”

“Is there any reason we need to make this torturous?”

It always had been from what I’d heard, but I guess he was right. I should be grateful this was easy for us, not questioning why.

I watched his face, however, and for one second it felt familiar, though I couldn’t name why. Perhaps he was in the crowd back at the arena. That made the most sense.

Summer took my hand and squeezed it. “Adone is special.”

I wasn’t so sure I was quite this worthy, but if she saw me this way in her eyes, how could I do anything less? The hard shell I’d constructed around my heart to protect me from the pain started to crack. I could let one person other than my brothers in: Summer.

“Where would you like to go for your rest period?” Burmoot asked. “How about to where Tetryx is, Adone?”

“Where is Tetryx?”

“Well,” Burmoot said, “he and Anna are living in his family estate.”

“Vunne stole it from him,” I said with a growl. “How could he be living there. Vunne hasn’t captured him again, has he?” I’d storm there myself and—

“Lord Vunne is dead,” Burmoot said with grim satisfaction. “Tetryx killed him.”

“I wanted to tighten my fingers around his neck myself.”

Burmoot shrugged. “I guess he did it for you. For Bahros and Jade, plus Zomir and Camila, as well.”

“Wait. Wait. My friends are safe?” Summer asked.

“They’re all together at Tetryx’s family estate. They’re waiting for you two to come home.” He clapped his hands. “No one is listening at the moment, because you just finished the first task. What do you say? Shall I transport you there, Adone?”

“No.”

Burmoot’s smile faded. “All right.” He turned to Summer. “What about you, my dear. Would you like to return to Earth?”

I braced myself for her to say yes. Despite her escaping from the only home she’d known for years, she’d had a plan in place for her future. It would be wrong of me to interfere.

She took my hand. “I don’t want to go to Earth any more than Adone wants to go to Tetryx’s estate. Not yet. We’re going to finish this Game. After we’ve won, we can decide where we want you to take us.”

Burmoot huffed. “You are wise, I suppose. But how can you be sure you’ll finish the next two tasks?”

“Because Adone and I are a team, and together, we can’t be defeated.”

My hearts swelled with joy. I wanted to hug her, kiss her, and do many things with her delectable body, though not while Burmoot was around.

“Then where would you like to go for the night? You are entitled to a reward for completing the first task.”
