My brain was under a lot of pressure, so I couldn’t have heard Cole right. Everything I’d been busting my ass for had been for nothing. If what he was saying was true, then there had never been a shipment of girls. Whoever gave my uncle the tip about Gio trafficking kidnapped girls had been bullshitting him.

They’d lied, and that lie had become mine.

The things I’d done over the past few months on the search for those girls had been horrible things. I’d killed before. I’d done unspeakable things in the name of my revenge, but there had been things I’d done for that lie that I might not have done otherwise. I didn’t take pleasure in killing people or torturing them. Sometimes things must be done, but I was after something that didn’t exist.

“You were waiting for me.” It wasn’t a question. I didn’t know what to say, so I repeated what he said back to him. I wasn’t sure if I was shocked, upset, pissed off, or just in disbelief. I couldn’t wrap my mind around the fact that it had all been fake.

“We didn’t know who we were waiting for, but we waited to see who we would catch. It seems we caught ourselves a catfish.” Dante ran the tip of his finger across the seeping wound just above my breast as he stared at me.

That action was enough to bring me out of the mind fuck I just found myself in.

Not a single word of my response left my mouth before the sound of a commotion came from the other side of the door. There wasn’t enough time for the Valentino boys to react to the commotion before the room shook and filled with smoke.

Looks like I wouldn’t have to find a way out. Someone had done that for me and blasted the door open already.
