The guard didn’t bat an eyelash as he pulled the gun out of where I stuck it in the back of my jeans. There wasn’t any reaction to the one he found in my ankle holster either. It wasn’t until he pulled the third knife off me that his eyebrows rose and disappeared into his hairline.

“What? A girl can never have too much protection,” I said to him when he was done and stood staring at me with an armful of my weapons.

“Don’t lose any of those. I’ll be wanting them back when I leave.” I snickered as he struggled to find a place to put them as he searched Jasper too.

“When did you load yourself down with all of those?”

“When you were getting around to leave. Did you think after everything that’s happened in the last twenty-four hours I’d be going anywhere without being armed to the teeth?” He was out of his mind if he thought I would be going anywhere in the near future without at least three weapons strapped to my body.

The sounds of rumbled talking echoed through the small foyer as we moved into the condo. Everyone was gathered in the living room. I wanted to take it as a good sign that we weren’t meeting in Santiago’s office. It would be too much like I was being called into the principal’s office to be reprimanded.

In the mood I was in, that wouldn’t go over very well.

My uncle was the first person I saw as I rounded the corner, and I was surprised at the distrust and suspicion that filled me. I wasn’t the type of person that trusted easily. I could count the number of people I trusted completely on one hand and still have fingers left over. My uncle had never quite made the list. There wasn’t anything in particular that made me feel that way about him. Nothing that flashed like a neon sign above his head that said he was untrustworthy, but he’d also raised me to be that way. He always said the only person I could trust was myself.

He wanted me to be aware and suspicious of everyone around me. Himself included. Over the years, I didn’t pay any attention to the distrust and uncertainty I felt towards him. It was a constant in my life, and there had never been anything that proved it was truly warranted. The feeling just became part of my life.

With everything that was going on in my life right now, I was feeling that suspicion a little more than usual.

It was time to find out what the fuck was going on.
