Chapter Fourteen

I SHOULD'VE GONE WITH them.

I should’ve gone with the rest of my pack instead of staying behind. Oliver is headed for a dangerous place, and while I know he can handle himself and the others will watch his back, staying here goes against every instinct inside of me. But my mother needs my assistance with the coming vote, and since we're keeping where they're headed quiet, I didn't feel like I could tell her no. There would be too many questions.

This way, hopefully no one will even notice they're gone. The vote is important anyway.

And a small part of me is glad I stayed because Aurora is here. Not that I've exchanged a single word with her in days or even barely seen her. But leaving her here alone doesn't feel right. I'm not used to feeling this torn. I don't care for it one fucking bit.

Aurora's arrival has turned everything upside down. Usually I don't give a shit about the omegas who arrive here in the program. I make whatever niceties my position as council member requires of me, and then I return to my regular life. I already have my omega, so there's never been any interest in meeting the new ones who come through here. I've had my omega since we were children, pimply and gangly before our designations even came in.

Since Oliver is gone, I'm checking in at the library for the morning. I keep one eye peeled for Aurora's arrival, but she doesn't show. With each passing moment, tension coils inside of me, worry battering at my mind. I tell myself she's none of my business, no matter how delicious she smells, but I can't quite convince myself.

By the time I've finished up morning Storytime, I'm a fucking pathetic mess stomping across town to the omega housing building, and upstairs to Aurora's rooms.

I pound on her door with my fist, all but vibrating with frustrated worry, irritated with myself and with her for not bothering to keep her usual schedule and stressing me out.

No one answers.

The worry that has been stiffening my shoulders the entire day explodes into a raging inferno, a growl rumbling in my chest as I pound harder at her door, the wood squealing in protest at the rough treatment.

Instead of Aurora's door, another opens up next door, and a familiar read pokes out. It's Aurora's friend that I see her with a lot. I don't remember her name.

"What the hell are you doing?"

I clear my throat and smooth down my clothes, trying to play it cool. “I came to check on Aurora. She didn't show up at the library today."

The omega crosses her arms. “Oh. Yeah. Her heat hit last night. She's fine, she just... can't come to the door right now. And you being here is not going to help her."

Fuck.

My cock immediately hardens at the thought of her in there writhing in her nest, desperate for me, for my scent, begging and dripping for my knot.

The omega glares harder. “Seriously. You need to leave. I've been checking in with her and will handle it if she needs help."

"But—“

She cuts me off. “Don't you have your own omega to care for?"

Ouch.

I nod, shoulders slumping. ”I...well, yes."

"Then worry about him, and leave Aurora to me."

"Please come find me if... well, if she needs more than..." I trail off, feeling like such an asshole.

"Don't worry. Rory has all the help she needs in there."

I can't stop the jealous snarl from releasing from my throat, but I cut it off, guilt welling at the alarmed expression on the omega's face.

"Sorry. Yeah. Fuck." I turn tail and pretty much run out of there like my ass is on fire.
