As we chat and eat and drink, I'm actually able to relax.

Until Oliver grabs my hand and pulls me to my feet, dragging me over to the small dance floor where couples are swaying and spinning.

I'm an omega, so I've been forced to take plenty of dance lessons. Though Oliver dances like no one I've ever partnered with before. He's pure sin and silk, the way he moves his body. He has me almost panting for him within moments.

Thankfully, Callan rescues me, pulling me away from Oliver and into his arms, Enzo taking my place. We continue on like that for song after song, constantly switching partners, dancing and laughing and causing a general ruckus.

It doesn’t occur to me until I'm breathless, gulping back sangria at our table and so many eyes are on us that they probably did this so it would look real— my connection and interest in this pack.

The knowledge sweeps some of the giddiness right out of me, and I swallow back the bitter taste of disappointment. I remind myself it doesn’t matter, that I have no real plans to join their pack. I don't need to fall for my own lie.

"Rory? Everything okay?" Enzo touches my back lightly, his brow creased with concern.

I shoot him a strained smile. “Yeah. Just got a little light-headed."

He yanks a chair out from the table. “Well, sit down. We can take a break for a bit. Or we can go home, if you want."

Home.

I don't have one of those. I don't think I ever really have. The house I grew up in never felt like home, and nowhere in this program have I found a place that felt like it. The closest I got was my shitty dorm in college, but even that wasn't home.

And as comfortable as their place is, it's not home either. It can't be.

Grey stomps over, his face lined with stress.

"What's wrong?" Enzo asks.

Grey eyes me with worry. “I just got a message from my mother. Seems yours got here a day earlier than we expected. She's demanding that you are brought to her."

My stomach sinks, my slight happy buzz disappearing immediately.
