“And what does that mean?”

“What do you think it means?”

“I don’t know, but I have a feeling I’m no longer your other half.”

“I’ll always be your sister, Adrián.” I stand up and walk to the closet. Adrián comes up behind me.

“Will it help if I tell you that I was going to talk to you about it yesterday morning, when Marcos interrupted us with the race thing?”

“If you wanted to tell me, you would have done it a long time ago. You’d have done it when you first hooked up with her.”

“Just because I didn’t tell you, doesn’t mean I wasn’t going to.”

“I don’t care, it’s done now.”

“Yes, it’s done. And it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, Pris. Me hooking up with her is not an attack against you. The last thing I want is to hurt you.”

“I know that. I know you wouldn’t hurt me on purpose, but my loyalty to you says that I’d refuse to speak to anyone who’d caused you the slightest harm. And I don’t care if I sound incoherent.”

“If I’d thought Carmen could hurt you in any way, I wouldn’t have hooked up with her, I assure you.”

“It would hurt me if you got serious with her and spent time at her house with her sister, for example. She’d become a part of your family. Your family, Adrián. Haven’t you realized what that means?

“Pris... that’s not fair.”

“No, it’s not,” I admit. “Of course it isn’t. I’m going to take a shower.”

I grab some clean clothes and head to the bathroom, even though I’ve already showered at Alex’s house.

“Pris. Pris!”

I hear my brother’s call, but I ignore him. I’m tired. Emotionally exhausted. I can’t take it anymore. I flick the lock and lean against the bathroom door. Did I ever really think that coming back to my hometown wouldn’t be a big drama?

When I return to my bedroom half an hour later, Jaime is sitting on my bed waiting for me.

“Pris, what the hell happened with Adrián?” he asks as soon as he sees me coming in.

“Did you talk to him?”

“No, but I saw him.”

“You have no idea how messed up things got.”

“You have no idea either.”

“What do you mean?”

“I... I have to tell you something.”

“What?”

“Not today. Today it’s about you. Tomorrow, I promise. Now come here and tell me what happened.”

I walk over to the bed and sit next to him. I need to talk to someone; I need to share these things I’m feeling, what I’m thinking, and confirm that I’m not crazy. So, once again, I belch everything out. And this time, I don’t hold anything back.

Two hours later, I find myself in the pub, sitting around a table with my four brothers, Jaime, and beer. After lunch, Marcos came up with the idea that we, the Cabana siblings, should come here together for a drink, as a family. It’s a clear stratagem to try to solve my situation with Adrián and that’s why he suggested it in front of our parents, who have no idea. And, as the ambush it was, I had to accept it with a smile on my face. I know he did it with the best of intentions, it’s just that... he just doesn’t understand what’s going on between us.
