“Why?”

“I asked John the other day. Turns out she liked to do it in my bed. He even thought she had a crush on me.”

“I knew it!”

“Yes. I remember you used to try to tell me. I’m sorry I didn’t believe you, Pris. And I’m sorry I didn’t believe you when you said you came to see me. But most of all, I’m sorry I blamed you for my accident and treated you so badly when you came back.”

I hugged him tightly, letting him know there was nothing to forgive. I rested my head on his chest and stayed there, transfixed.

“God, you can’t imagine what I felt when I heard your voice in Jellyfish Cove,” I confessed. “I’d just arrived, and I was already running into you!”

“Oh, you have no idea how I felt. I saw you there, practically naked, next to a guy in his underwear, who, to make things worse, was hot. No wonder he’s had Hugo half-dumb all summer. And you were... beautiful, Priscila. So, so beautiful.”

I raised my head and looked into his eyes.

“We hadn’t stopped loving each other, so in the end, the inevitable happened. We’re both too weak to resist this. And now is when you tell me this was never just an itch.”

“It was never an itch,” he admitted. “It was... human.”

“Human. Yes. That defines it pretty well. Why haven’t we talked about all this before, Alex?”

“I couldn’t. It was as if... As if...”

“You were betraying yourself by sleeping with me, but at the same time you couldn’t stop doing it?”

“Yes, exactly.”

“I felt the same. And I’m glad we let ourselves be driven by our hearts and not our heads.”

“Me too”

“And I’m sorry for all the things I did wrong; I don’t even know where to begin to apologize.”

“Don’t apologize. Tell me you love me. Just replace every ‘I’m sorry’ with ‘I love you.’

“Then I’m afraid I’ll have to say I love you from here to eternity.”

“Well, you’d better start now.”

“I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you...”

I only stopped when Alex shut me up with a kiss. And another. And another.

* * *

“Hello, there.” Alex hugs me from behind and kisses my neck.

“You’re not supposed to get up so early! I was going to make a surprise breakfast.”

“You were going to try, you mean.”

Hmmm. He knows me so well.

“Well, yeah.”

“What’s the plan for today?” he asks, coming to my side to help.

“I don’t know. Start our happily ever after? That was the deal, right?”
