“He is not my husband. Where did you see him?”

“He was in the house across the street. He was wearing a tank top and very tiny black shorts.”

“You checked him out, huh?”

“Well, yeah. And, by the way, he’s a hunk. I didn’t know you liked brawny guys; you’ve never hooked up with one—rather you repelled them like a plague. I thought you hated gym guys, but now I’m starting to understand...”

“Don’t let your imagination run away. Alex isn’t a gym guy, he’s got muscle and a great body because he’s a sportsman, he’s... he was ...” I correct myself, “he was a swimmer.”

“A swimmer?”

“Yes. Professional.”

“Professional-professional?”

“Yep, he kind of won a bronze medal, a historic fact in Spanish swimming.”

Why is it that, despite everything, I still feel this sensation of pride in my chest when I remember Alex’s achievements?

“Say what!”

“Just what you heard.”

“Oh, wait. Oh, fuck, wait, wait...”

“What?”

“Alex St. Claire. Fuck! Alexander St. Claire, the swimmer! That’s why his name sounded familiar to me! Are you married to Alexander St. Claire?”

“I told you yesterday.”

“I mean I fucking know who he is. He was a promise, he had a hell of a career ahead, right?”

“Yes, he did,” I say. “He won an Olympic diploma at a very young age, he was quite a revelation. And after that he won his first medal at the Olympics.”

“I remember. He was a rising star, but something happened. Did he get injured?”

“He had an accident and had to quit competitions,” I explain. “He was twenty-five.”

“Yeah, now I remember. He had a hell of a skiing accident. Damn, it had to be horrible for him, how could he bear it?”

“I don’t know. I wasn’t there.”

“Were you already separated?”

“Yes.”

“What happened, Pris?”

“He took too much risk skiing off-piste and he collided with some rocks.”

“I don’t mean that, I mean... what happened between you two four years ago? And don’t give me the ‘we’ve just arrived’ excuse.”

“But we’ve just arrived.”

“Okay,” he says reluctantly, “I’ll give in, for now. But just tell me one thing: it was because of him, right?”

“What do you mean?”
