I could have died. Maybe seeing death so closely should seem like food for thought, but all I want is to forget. I thanked Alex because if it wasn’t for him... Well, whatever. I don’t want to think about it. It’s too terrifying.

“Hi,” I greet my friend as I place a freshly brewed coffee in front of him.

“Hey, blondie. That blue looks good. It suits you.”

I have to check which of my brothers is wearing blue—“blondie” by itself isn’t much of a clue in our case. Adrián, of course. Jaime looks at him lustfully and for the first time ever, Adrián plays along. He sticks out his tongue, licks his lower lip, and winks at my friend. Jaime chokes on his coffee.

“I have to work,” Hugo says suddenly, pushing back from the table.

“It’s Sunday,” Marcos reminds him.

“And? Sometimes you work on Sundays too.”

“Yes, but that’s because I work shifts and sometimes there are emergencies that—”

“Right.” And with that, Hugo leaves the kitchen.

Wow, someone got up on the wrong side of the bed. In this house, every morning is a surprise. You never know what you’re going to get. Jaime blinks at the slam of the door and leans back in his chair.

“What are our plans for today?” he asks.

“Go to the beach?” I suggest.

“In this weather?”

Today has welcomed us with a sky smothered in large, dark, dense clouds as far as the eye can see. There are so many you can’t even distinguish their shapes; it’s hard to tell where one ends and another begins.

“Sure, these days are the best.”

“But it looks like it’s going to pour down.”

“No, it’s not,” Marcos, Adrián and I say in unison.

“What? Are you meteorologists now and I didn’t know?”

“No, but we know the sky over our town,” Adrián affirms. “There will be no rain today.”

“Not a single drop,” Marcos adds.

“Whatever you say, Cabanas.”

“Don’t you think it’s kind of weird, your husband being so close to your brothers? Considering how much he hates you?” Jaime asks as we cycle down to the beach.

“What’s weird is the fact that my brothers are friends with Alex. I don’t understand that camaraderie. But not the other way around.”

“Why? What do you mean?”

“I mean my brothers are awesome. Why shouldn’t Alex want to be friends with them?”

“Well, because they’re your brothers, and you’re his wife, or his ex-wife, or... bah, whatever. You’re from another world.”

“Mmm.”

“It’s weird, Pris. Period.”

“Okay.”
