There was no way I could walk away from the heat we’d just sparked between us even if I wanted to.

And I didn’t want to.

I made my way to the baby’s room.

Watching from the doorway, I took in my two favorite people in the world, and my heart caught in my throat as I heard Hayden’s whispered words.

“She’s the one, Jack-o. My heart knows it and I want to make her mine. What a story to tell one day, huh? We found your momma in the freezer section.”

Jack made a whimpering baby sound.

“Shhh, shhh, shhh,” Hayden soothed as he swayed back and forth. “You’re okay. We’re okay. I love her, Jack.”

With my heart nearly melting from his quiet, private words, I walked into the room. Placing my hand on his arm and watching as he bounced his son back to sleep, I leaned in and kissed him. “I think I’m falling in love with both boys in this house. It wasn’t expected and definitely wasn’t in my plans, but it’s the first thing in my life that’s ever felt so perfect and right.”

When I made to leave the room, wanting to give Hayden time with his baby, his arm snaked out and pulled me close. “How cliché is it for a single dad to fall for his nanny?” he teased.

I huffed a laugh into his shoulder so as not to wake up Jack. “We’ve been unconventional from the start, we can deal with cliché.”

“Let me put him down,” Hayden whispered.

In the dim light of the hall, I waited for the man I’d quickly fallen for to join me.

Hayden closed Jack’s door and wrapped me in his arms, dipping his head to kiss me, long and slow, heat barely contained between us.

“I want you, Lexie,” he growled against my lips. “Want you in my bed and in my life, but not just as convenient sex or something temporary.”

“I don’t think I could do friends with benefits or short-term with you even if I tried,” I whispered, dropping my head back, offering Hayden the sensitive skin of my neck, moaning as he licked and sucked like he wanted to devour me.

“Did you mean what you said in there?” he asked, gripping my chin gently.

“More than any words I’ve ever said. I love you and Jack as if you were my husband and child. Yes, it happened quickly, but I wouldn’t trade it. I’ve had plenty of non-love matches, so I recognize real love when it’s right in front of me. This,” I paused to place a hand on his chest, “this is real and I don’t want to lose it. If you’ll have me.”

“I would marry you tonight if I could,” Hayden said against my lips. “I lost myself after Kylie and didn’t have it in me to fight my way back when Jack came to stay. You breathed life into me and gave me the boost I needed to open my eyes and look around. I saw what was missing. I sawyou.”

With a quiet sob, I pushed up on tiptoes to kiss him, savoring his flavor and the warm strength of his arms around me.

“Come to bed?” Hayden asked, his words sex-rough and suggestive.

I nodded.

He led me down the hall and locked his bedroom door behind us.

I had a feeling that night was going to be anotherfirst day of the rest of your lifetypes.

And I wanted to enjoy every single moment.
