Two hours later, my son’s cries woke us on the baby monitor.

“We keep it dark and quiet. You change him, I’ll get a bottle. If we’re lucky, he’ll sleep a few more hours with a full tummy,” I said as I pulled on a pair of boxers and she slipped into a soft, worn t-shirt.

We made our way to Jack’s room and found him soaked through.

With soft, gentle words, we agreed upon me changing the bedding before getting the bottle and Lexie would give him a nice warm bath in a dimly lit bathroom.

Once the wet sheets were in the laundry and the baby bed remade, I fixed a bottle and made my way to the bedroom.

The sights and sounds before me nearly brought me to my knees, my heart clawing its way up my throat.

Lexie had a clean baby Jack dressed in warm, dry pajamas as if she’d been bathing and changing my son since the day he was born. As she held him close, singing and swaying, Jack’s little hand reached up to pat her cheek.

“Ma ma ma ma,” his drowsy little voice chanted.

Lexie’s song caught in her throat and the next few moments were a complete blur as I made my way to her side.

Dropping to my knee, I took her hand. “Marry me. We can wait a while, but I want the world to know you’re mine. Let me put a ring on your finger. Please? Be my wife?”

Lexie’s swaying never stopped, my son in her arms a top priority, but she sniffed and nodded. “Yes,” she whispered.

Standing, I kissed her cheek, and handed her the bottle. Wrapping my arm around her, I watched as my sleepy son guzzled down his milk, drifting easily back to sleep.

He barely stirred when placed back in his bed, and I quickly grabbed Lexie’s hand and led her back to my room.

This time when I got her under me, spreading her legs wide, sliding between her slick folds, I moved with long, slow thrusts, holding her close as I whispered in her ear. “Love you so damn much.”

Lexie sobbed my name as I made love to her, clinging to me as she came apart in my arms, her tears mixing with her words of love even as I spilled my seed inside her once again.

Exhausted, our desires quenched for the time being, we ignored the sticky mess we’d made and curled together to get as many minutes of rest as our son would allow before we started our day.

Our son.

Lexie was mine.

Jack would never know life without a loving, caring mother.

And I planned to spend the rest of my life loving the woman of my dreams.

I hadn’t known I was looking for her, but fate stepped in and brought me a dream come true.

Epilogue

Lexie

“Jack, be gentle,” I said, watching my five-year-old son push his two-year-old brother on the swings as we waited for Hayden to join us at the park.

“Momma, when I have a sister, can I bring her to the park to play?” Jack asked.

I smiled, touching a hand to my very pregnant belly. Life as we knew it as a family of four was destined to change in a very short amount of time. Jack was beyond excited to be a big brother again.

At only two, Miles wasn’t exactly sure what was happening. I think he liked the idea of a baby, but it was a very abstract concept.

Our little girl, Tessa, would arrive within the next three weeks and every single day made me think I couldn’t survive one more minute without exploding.

“When she’s a little bigger,” I told Jack. “We’ll come to the park on nice days so you can Miles can play while Tessa sleeps.”
