“How are you going to get there?”

“I am going to call Salat, and then, I am going to summon the royal transport to come get me.” He buttoned his cuffs and stood straight. “I need to see how she is and help if I can.”

“She might not appreciate the assistance.”

“Tough. I broke her, and I am obligated to fix her.”

Etgar covered his eyes. “Obligated. Oh, tell her that. I am sure that will end well. How is it that you are older than I am? You are talking like a teenager.”

“I am the eldest son of the king of the Sethir-Nin. I have responsibilities and obligations beyond the standard citizen.”

Etgar snorted. “And I am the son of a crime boss. Our responsibilities don’t have to make us into assholes. Your father was not your mother’s first lover. He is her third assigned alpha and the only one who fathered children with her. At least Ylara had a choice.”

Riithan paused. “You know my parents have a very happy union.”

“Sure. Now. Your arrival has made the difference in their lives. Imagine what would happen if you had a little girl.”

“The Sethir-Nin would go insane. They would be lining up at the door to meet her.” He muttered. “She said she wasn’t pregnant.”

“If you were to get her back to health, you could just hand Ylara off to one of the other alphas. That is what happens next now that she has been outed as an omega, right? The Sethir-Nin claim her for their alphas, and she gets handed off to the highest-ranking compatible. No choice, no chance, and kept in the stronghold. That will kill her, by the way.”

Riithan paused. “I get it. You have made your point. Now, I have things to do. People to call.” He raised his wrist and called for a long-range transport, only to be told there was one on the way.

“What?” Riithan was surprised.

“The royal couple began transport to Daycross half an hour ago. They should be at your coordinates in an hour, Your Highness.”

“Thank you.” Riithan closed the call. “Etgar, what did you do?”

“I told your father that you had found an omega, seen her through her heat, and discarded her because you didn’t like her background.” Etgar chuckled. “Enjoy the fallout of that one.”

He pushed past Riithan and left him to puzzle out how he would be one of the only Sethir-Nin to reject an omega who had come to him willingly and eagerly, knowing what it would mean. She had been the ideal mate for one of his people, and he had flinched at the wrong moment.

Etgar got back into his car, and his driver took him home. He ran his hand over his forehead and growled low. He had wanted nothing more than to beat Riithan’s head into the wall and rip his tail off. Ylara was sweet and the next best thing to a sister that Vallu had. She had arranged the bachelorette, girls’ nights, and other get-togethers with Vallu. She made sure that Vallu’s friends kept in touch, as did her family. Ylara had a good heart, and it was terrifying to see it broken.

Ylara woke up, and the light was streaming in on her. She was in a bed with crisp white bedding, and her greyed hands looked less like makeup in a B-movie.

She grunted and tried to get up.

Khytten came through the door and gasped. “Ylara, hold still.”

“I need to use the bathroom.”

Khytten tutted and walked over to her and lifted her.

“When did you get strong? Didn’t you just give birth?”

“I did. The babies are with Salat, and I have been drinking my own supply. I don’t know what hit you, but it is resisting me. Don’t worry. I am going to crack through that bastard.”

“Scorpion venom.”

“Like an insect?”

Ylara chuckled as they entered the restroom. “A really big one.”

When she was done and had washed her hands, her friend helped her back to bed.
