He quirked his lips. “That is your kink?”

“Everybody has one, whether they know it or not. I have to find people who compliment each other and get them invited to the party. If they don’t know what turns them off or starts their engines, I have to find a way to tease them to get them to accept the possibility.”

“How would you tease me into the possibility of being a patron?”

“You can’t. You are blacklisted.”

“Humour me.”

“Well, I would find some escorts who are omegas, who like to dance, and who like patrons with extras. Some that are venom-resistant wouldn’t be a bad idea. I can think of three off the top of my head. I would send you their silhouettes and activation specs in a file, then send you a message after to state that if you were interested in spending time with any of those ladies, you would need to apply to be a patron of the Blind Date Corporation.”

“Does that usually work?”

“Yeah. Eighty percent of the time, the guys go for it.”

“What about the women?”

“They are more difficult. Wait, you mean the female patrons, right?”

“I meant the escorts.”

“Oh. Right. Well, it’s easier for them. Sex without awkward meetings at work the next day or getting calls is a fairly freeing thing.”

“Do you actually know who any of your patrons were?”

She chuckled. “Only one. He’s on the BDC board of directors and pays to meet with all the new escorts. We had a nice dinner, and he talked me through my nerves. After that, it took the edge off the panic that I felt.”

He nodded. “Who was he?”

“Oh. Torun.” She stumbled as he halted.

“Big guy. Purple. Dark hair and glowing eyes?”

Ylara nodded. “Yeah. Most of the patrons are on teams or are agents. The others are high-level criminals with powerful activations. In general, folks are hard to shop for. They go through escorts until they find one that matches their needs. That’s how Salat found Khytten.”

He looked at her and stroked her cheek. “I am sorry that I wrecked things for you.”

She turned her head away. “It’s all right. I never saw a happy ending. I should have known there wouldn’t be one.”

“Why does your mind go to fairy tales?”

“Brit and I used to read them when we first met our mom. They helped us get our reading back up to standard level. I locked on to the idea of being rescued and cherished, and Brit wanted to learn to fight the dragons.” She snorted. “I am really fucking broken.”

He stroked her cheek, and she moved her head away.

“Don’t.”

He turned her to face him. “Why not?”

She took a deep breath in. “After they rejected me, they always tried to apologize. And it hurts more than you can imagine.”

“How do I make it not hurt?” He stroked the corner of her mouth with his thumb.

“I honestly don’t know. It has never not hurt.”

He kissed her and pushed her into him with his tail.

She sighed and relaxed against him. He leaned back and caressed her lower lip. “So, you do want me.”
