I sighed. Men didn’t say things like that. Not in my experience, anyway. I could’ve stood there listening to him say it for a good couple of hours. But instead, I laid my hand on his chest over his heart and absorbed the soft steady thud, imagining his beating in time with mine. “I suppose I should get to bed now. The jet lag—”To demonstrate, I yawned.“—seems to be catching up.”

This time, his smile was sad. “By tomorrow we won’t be married any longer and you’ll be free to roam all over Europe at your leisure.”

I nodded even though the thought wasn’t as pleasing as it was a few hours ago. “Yeah. Well, goodnight, Henryk.”

He inclined his head in an old-fashioned manner. “Good night, Erin.”

I grabbed hold of his hand and tugged him back. I had a belly full of alcohol courage and I wasn’t afraid to use it. “I want to kiss you and I want you to kiss me.” Oh, yeah. That was exactly what I wanted.

His eyes burned with desire. I wasn’t the most experienced woman in the world, but I knew desire when I saw it, even though he said, “I shouldn’t.”

I lifted my chin, bringing our lips closer. “You should.” My voice was a whisper, but it sounded loud inside my head. I wasn’t quite begging yet, but I was on the verge.

When he moved in, slowly, deliberately, I sucked in a shallow breath and he cupped my face between his hands. “Erin.” It wasn’t more than my name, but it was the best sound I’d ever heard. He stared into my eyes and I never wanted to look away.

But then he lowered his head and his mouth brushed mine, slow and soft before he came back in and the heat of his lips branded mine. An ache started low in my belly as he continued this sensuous caress. The world floated away.
