“I’m here to secure help from the wolves in protecting my best friend. As for your brother, I don’t know his role, only that he told me I had to succeed. Not that I wouldn’t do it anyway. Emery deserves to be protected, and her child is innocent in all this.”

The truth fell from her lips like water, just as it did with every single one of his rapid fire questions that followed.

“Who sired the child?”

“Emery is carrying the heir to the vampires. She’s also a witch.”

“The baby is a hybrid?”

“Yes. Like you.”

Draven tensed under her hands but continued his questioning. “Why do you have the moonstone?”

“I don’t know.”

Draven’s eyes narrowed on her and she was sure he was tasting the lie in her words. “Do you know where the other half is?”

“No. I didn’t even know there was another half.”

“Are you here to ruin my family?”

“No. I don’t have that much power.”

Flora answered each question as quickly and effectively as she could, but every word she spoke only served to ramp up the agitation in Draven’s voice.

He grew silent for more than a beat, and Flora could feel the heat of his glare studying her every feature. His voice dropped to a deadly octave. “Do you know why my wolf is here, pacing a hole in my soul?”

“No,” she rubbed the spot on his chest where his heart should be, hoping to soothe his discomfort. “But that sounds painful.”

“Fucking hell.” Draven cursed and jerked away from her. “Why do I want you?”

His last question had been barely a whisper, and before she could process it, a shockwave rolled through her. Flora tumbled backward and slammed against the wall. Crippling nausea washed over her and where before her head felt clear as glass, it now raced with all the thoughts she should’ve had when he was questioning her. The restraint she should have shown but didn’t.

She doubled over, her knees finding the hard wood floors in the darkness. Her stomach twisted, and her clit throbbed. “What did you do to me?” she panted.

“That’s the power of venom, darlin’.” She didn’t need to see him to know he wore a satisfying grin on his perfect lips as he walked away down what she assumed was a hallway.

A single tear stained her cheek, and she wasn’t sure if it was because she felt physically ill or was emotionally drained from the venom whiplash she’d just received at his hand. All she knew was that she was thankful for the darkness surrounding them.

She wiped away the evidence of her weakness and rose from the floor. He played dirty, just as she had when outing him. It didn't matter that she hadn’t meant to do it, she’d started this war from the moment she’d shown up. Only she hadn’t been prepared to fight.

Now she was.

With a deep calming breath, Flora pulled on her big girl panties and marched down the hall, ready to unleash hell.
