Her eyes widened. “Really?”

“Flora?” He warned, tipping his head in her direction.

“Right. Trust you.”

She pressed her foot on the accelerator, and they took off down the straight away, fields of wild grass whooshing past them on either side. Flora’s blonde hair whipped around her face, and she sang at the top of her lungs alongside Bon Jovi.

The words were her anthem, and Draven couldn’t help but join her. In that moment, Flora wasn’t an excused member of a Culling, hoping for an immortal life, and he wasn’t a hybrid heir to a pack who was ready to disown him.

They were just a man and a woman. Two souls alive and living for the moment.

The song came to an end, and Flora sank back into the plush leather and sighed. “This is amazing.”

“If I had known all it would take was a little Bon Jovi and the wind in your hair to get you to live a little, I would have insisted we drive all the way to Lune.”

Flora shrugged. “Let's be real, it's the car too.”

“That we don’t get to keep.”

She cocked a brow. “Speak for yourself. I know Callum has enough money to buy a fleet of these. After this stunt, he’s getting me this freakin’ car.”

“Fuckingcar.”

She tilted her head at him, her brows knitted together. “What?”

“Say it.” Draven pushed. “Use the word Flora. Say, ‘He’s getting me this fucking car.’”

He loved the way her cheeks flushed. She didn’t need to curse to get her point across, but what was humanity if it wasn't finding every possible way to express herself? Mostly he wanted to hear the profanity fall from her lips.

Flora ran her tongue over her teeth, contemplating his request, but all Draven could think about was her running her tongue over other things. Namely him.

“Fine.” She jutted her chin out. “In the spirit of living, Callum is getting me this fucking car.”

“Atta girl.” He praised and he meant it. “I’ll back you up on that.” He reached down and changed the station searching for another song that would make her smile like that again.

For the next hour and a half, they sang oldies and classics at the top of their lungs only breaking to skim the stations for their next song. He learned her favorite color was purple, but not like in the rainbow, the deep indigo that came in the moments between sunset and night. She preferred sunrise to sunset though, and she’d never seen the ocean. She hated mashed potatoes and had never tasted a French fry, but loved macarons. Really anything sweet was a favorite of Flora’s. For as pampered as her life had been, he was learning Flora was simple in her wants and needs. She’d rather curl up with a good book than attend a gala, and her favorite place in the castle was out in the stables with the horses.

Flora was once more proving she was nothing like he imagined, and Draven found comfort in her presence. He was trying to convince her to find the joy in her humanity, but he hadn’t realized how much he needed to do the same. To just let go and be for a few hours.

Blackbirdby the Beatles came on, and Flora sucked in a gasp. “Mom,” she whispered.

Draven turned down the music enough that he could hear her, and his brow furrowed when he saw the panic lacing Flora’s features. “What?”

“Change it,” she pleaded, her eyes firmly locked on the road ahead of them.

The change in her voice gave him pause, but he couldn’t leave it alone. Along with everything else he felt for Flora, there was a large part of him that was sick of her secrets. “What? Why?”

She turned to look at him, her eyes brimming with tears. “Draven, change the damn song,” she yelled.

He changed the station and turned down the volume. “What happened?”

Her throat bobbed as she swallowed hard. “It’s nothing.”

Lie.

Draven tried to keep his anger in check. They may not know each other very well, but she was endangering them all by keeping her mouth shut.

He inhaled a breath meant to steady his voice, but it did little to curb his frustrations. “Your lips say one thing but your heart doesn’t lie. I let your half-truths slide on the plane because Mateo and Kade were there, but I won’t continue to allow them to pass.”
