“What the fuck, Joplin?” The larger man growled, taking off toward where she lay on the ground.

“She was going for a gun.”

“And exactly where was she hiding it? Between her barely there B cup boobs in a dress that leaves little to the imagination?”

It wasn’tthattight, she thought to herself. Then again, had she known she was going to be shot upon arrival, the emerald form-fitting dress wouldn’t have been her first choice. Maybe a bulletproof vest would’ve been a better option.

The big one knelt beside her and examined her shoulder. Flora winced as he prodded the wound, before grasping the bottom of his flannel and tearing off a piece. “Bad news is your fancy dress is ruined, but the good news is the bullet only grazed you.”

“Are you sure?” her eyes flitted to where the crimson stain on her dress continued to grow. “Because that is a-a lot of blood for a graze.”

Panic bloomed in her chest and all she could think was that if Callum had bothered to turn her first this wouldn’t be an issue.

“Oh, I didn’t say it didn’t take a big chunk from your shoulder. Joplin over here is a terrible shot. You’re lucky it wasn’t Kade out patrolling with me tonight. I’m Mateo, by the way. Draven’s lead enforcer.” He took the piece of fabric he’d torn and applied pressure to the wound, then wrapped it around her arm tightly and tied it off.

“I’d say it’s nice to meet you, but considering your friend here just took a chunk out of my arm...” Flora’s voice trailed off, and she gave her attacker an evil stare.

“I wouldn’t do that in front of Draven. He doesn’t take kindly to disrespect.” Mateo raked his concerned gaze down her body, likely checking for any other injuries. His eyes landed on the silver stone heating her chest. “Dios mio. Is that…? Fuck. Who did you say sent you again?”

“Callum, Draven’s brother.” Flora tried to sit up, wincing when Mateo stopped her. She examined Mateo’s face. And she realized the bomb she’d let drop. She wished she could take the words back, but the damage was already done. Thankfully, Mateo didn’t seem surprised that the heir to his pack wasn’t entirely wolf, but there was an awe in his eyes that hadn’t been there before. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Fuck.” He placed a hand on her uninjured shoulder and scrubbed his face with the other. “It’s a fucking miracle that’s why.” Mateo grew quiet and closed his eyes. His voice dropped to barely a whisper. “It’s like you’re touched by the moon. I can feel the stone when I’m this close to you.”

“What does that mean?”

His hand trembled slightly and he shook his head. “I don’t know, but you better get your story straight, flaca. Because Draven is not going to show you any mercy otherwise.”

“You’re taking me to him, then?”

“Si. Only time will tell if it’s to be a celebration or a funeral.” He leaned in close, his five o’clock shadow scraping against her ear as he whispered so quietly she wasn’t sure she heard him. “I suggest you don’t mention the brother thing if you value your life.”

Flora’s eyes widened as Mateo leaned back and met her gaze. A smile tugged at his lips, and he hollered over his shoulder. “Joplin, go get me the four-wheeler. I think our vampire princess here is about to make tonight very interesting.”
