Ignoring my more violent urges, I hugged her tighter, wishing I could go back in time and change everything.

What did we have left before seeing the judge? Less than a week. And then I’d have to let her go to keep her dark side safe from my own.

My phone rang, bringing me out of my thoughts. Reluctantly, I got out of bed and went to check the caller ID. Mince.

“Hey, man,” I said.

“I found your PI guy,” he answered. “Bob Wilden, a former police officer from your hometown.”

Oh, shit. That’s why he looked familiar. Bob had been Dad’s drinking buddy for as long as I could remember. The years had definitely not been kind to him.

“Thanks. I owe you another one,” I said, then, as an afterthought, added, “Can you order an extra home security kit?”

“Sure.”

I hung up the phone and turned back to Vera. My girl lay on her side, clutching the robe to her chest, a question in her eyes.

“The guy following you around is my dad’s friend.” And he was following her because I blabbed that I was engaged. What a dumbass. “I’m going to install a security system in your apartment, so you and your sisters are safe.”

“You think he’ll do anything?”

I shook my head. “Not likely, but better safe than sorry.”

Wait, Mince said Bob was a former police officer. Had he retired, or was Damian stirring enough shit to get that asshole fired? Damian had been talking to some local politicians, thinking Mom's accident hadn't been an accident, and Dad's buddies were covering it up.

Why did my family have to be such a mess?
