“I’m glad you called.”

“I’m glad you answered,” I responded with a satisfied smirk that Racquel matched as she climbed off my dick, the way her ass jiggled when she went to pick the empty condom wrapper up off the floor lowkey tempting me to give her one more round even though I knew her being here probably wasn’t the best look.

I mean, now that my deal with the Skyhawks was done, I technically should’ve been getting my shit together for the rest of training camp; more specifically, tomorrow night’s preseason game. But after dealing with Yani’s ass, I was desperate for a distraction, anything to take my mind off the little time we’d spent together since that shit had left me confused as hell.

When I first saw her getting dropped off at my parents’ house for reasons I still didn’t know, I was immediately fixated on how damn good she looked in the little black off-the-shoulder joint she had on. But then that attraction turned into… jealousy, I guess, since it was clear she’d been out with a nigga, going tit for tat about who she was seeing a much more comfortable realm for me until I offered to take her to get something to eat and quickly learned that being in close proximity to Yani was dangerous territory now.

Yet again, it was little shit like the smell of her perfume and the sound of her raspy voice with just a hint of a southern drawl that had my mind going places it had never gone before when it came to the girl I once considered my best friend. And that only got more intense when we got back to my crib and I finally got to learn more about what she’d been up to over the years, everything she shared only making me want to hold her, or kiss her, orshit, fuck her until she forgot about the state of Oregon altogether even if it was only for a moment.

That place meant a lot to her though.

I could tell by the way she spoke about her time there even though it hadn’t exactly ended on a high note. But considering it was also the reason why we’d fallen out, I would forever struggle to connect, lowkey grateful that it had even been brought up since it gave me a reason to cut Yani’s impromptu visit short.

Well… shorter than it might’ve been had we kept on reminiscing and sharing looks and shit. But apparently, it wasn’t short enough for Racquel not to take notice, a frown on her face when she returned from the kitchen and asked, “You already had company tonight?”

“Why you ask that?”

“Because there were two cups in the trash, Hawk,” she responded, crossing her arms over her chest when she added, “And one of them had lipstick on it.”

That damn lipstick.

It was the same shade of red she’d had on the other day. But with her face fully made up, her hair pulled up into a sleek bun, and an outfit that matched the energy, that shit waswaytoo sexy, just thinking about it bringing a smirk to my face as I finally explained, “One of my homegirls from high school came over for a little minute.”

For whatever reason, that fact amused Racquel, her eyebrow piqued teasingly when she repeated, “A homegirl from high school? What’sthatabout?”

“She just moved back to the city a little while ago, and we linked,” I answered with a shrug, finally hopping up from the couch to go clean myself up while Racquel followed me with more questions.

“What was she like, your high school sweetheart or something?”

“Nah, just a friend.”

“That you made it a priority to link up with on one of the most exciting days of your career?” Racquel pressed, her assumption making me laugh a little bit as I tossed the condom in the bathroom trash and explained, “It was more of a coincidence, really.”

Through the mirror, I watched as Racquel rolled her eyes in response. “You and I both know people don’t just show up at other people’s houses by coincidence anymore, Hawk.”

Shaking my head, I told her, “Nah, I didn’t mean that part. I was leaving my parents' crib, and I ran into her. She was hungry, so we went to grab some food right quick.”

Since all the other shit was irrelevant as far as Racquel’s understanding was concerned, I was keeping it as simple as possible. But unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to keep her from further inquiring, “You ran into her on your way from your parents’ house when you literally live not even five minutes away from them?”

“She lives across the street.”

“So she’s like, your old neighbor?”

Again, I laughed. “Damn, man. Why you got so many questions?”

“You’re right. Who you choose to spend time with is none of my business,” she responded quietly, only to get more hostile once she continued, “But if I’m not the only one you’re fuckin’, then…”

“Ahh, so that’s what this is really about,” I interrupted amusedly, turning around to face her when I asked, “You really think I called you over here right after I got through dealing with somebody else?”

Without giving me her eyes, she replied, “I honestly don’t know, Hawk.”

Grabbing her chin, I urged, “You know. You just love to start shit.”

“I’m not tryna start anything,” she insisted. “I’m just tryna figure out where I fit in all of this.”

“Because I had a friend over?” I laughed. “Damn, Rocki. My dick really got you buggin’ like that?”
