“Yeah, look,” I told her, moving so that she could see my screen as I scrolled through all the different replies to my story. And even though I was clicking on messages at random, the fact that they all pretty much said the same thing made it clear that people were very much interested in Yani’s work, prompting me to ask, “What you want me to say?”

“Hell, I don’t know,” she whined. “I mean, I knew people would like them, but I wasn’t prepared for all this.”

That was a fair reaction. But to me, it felt like a moment worth capitalizing on, a thought I shared with Yani when I responded, “Well if I was you, I’d probably be tryna monetize this shit. Making customs, selling designs, somethin’.”

Sure, designing sneakers through the online software might’ve been small-scale in comparison to what she saw herself doing as a career in designing for an actual company. But it was at least a step in the right direction, something to keep her skills sharp, and something she could easily make good money off of if she played this right.

Not that everything was about the money.

At the moment, it kind of was though. And since I knew she didn’t want to be at Just Kickin’ It forever -not that I was letting that happen anyway-, I was happy to see the revelation playing out on her face as she replied, “I never thought of that,” the wheels already turning enough for her to comment, “I need a name though.”

“Yani’s Designs.”

Giggling, she reminded me, “I’m only Yani to you, Lance.”

“Okay, Briyana’s Designs then,” I amended, Yani shaking her head as she went into deep thought before her eyes lit up with an answer.

“Kicks by Bri.”

“Kicks by Bri,” I repeated, the way it had so easily rolled off my tongue making it easy for me to give an approving nod when I told her, “Yeah, that’s the one, baby.” And even though she smirked and blushed in response because she just couldn’t help herself every time I called her that, I could see she was legitimately hyped to have already checked one task off the list, wasting no time to rush into another as she grabbed her phone and said, “Now I need to buy my domain name.”

Chuckling, I responded, “I’m pretty sure a little Instagram or somethin’ will do for now. Matter of fact, go ahead and make one so I can tag you in a post.”

With an affirmative nod, she got to work on that while I made it my business to get a good picture of the shoes, even going as far as taking them upstairs to the cave so I could get a whole vibe going for the set of photos that I was lowkey proud to share once I made my way back downstairs to show Yani. But honestly, I was a little distracted when I saw how damn sexy she looked standing at the kitchen island with her elbows resting against the granite and a determined expression on her face, the sight making me pause for a moment to appreciate her beauty, and her booty, until she teased, “Take a picture. It’ll last longer.”

“Shit, you ain’t said nothin’ but a word,” I responded, Yani peeking over her shoulder with a smirk as I snapped a quick photo that was definitely going on my home screen. And once she saw how good she looked in it, she immediately asked me to Airdrop it to her so that she could share it to her Instagram, a request that went denied when I told her, “Nah, this one’s for me.”

She sucked her teeth in response, but she didn’t argue, instead pressing me to show her the pictures of the shoes that Iwaswilling to share. And once we decided on a mutual favorite, I got to work on making a post out of it while Yani stood right next to me watching, every letter I typed making her buzz with excitement as I finished the caption that tagged her brand-new page then asked, “You ready for this?”

I could literally see the nerves on her face in response to that question. And understandably so since neither of us really knew what was about to happen. But it made me proud as hell to see her push past any and all doubts, giving me a fearless nod when she responded, “Let’s go.”
