It was all coming together.

With a little elbow grease, a ton of patience, and a lot of help from my parents, my two-bedroom apartment in Beaverton was finally starting to look like a home. One that I was proud to show off as I gave Nala a quick tour via Facetime while my parents were away picking us up some dinner.

Why it took both of them to do that, I wasn't sure. But since they’d at least been getting along for the past week we’d all been together, I wasn’t asking any questions, instead beaming with pride as Nala complimented, “Bri, your place is seriously the cutest.”

“Isn’t it though? My mom really did her thing with the decor.”

While I’d never really made the connection before, it was clear to me now that I’d gotten my love for colors and textures from her. And since we surprisingly had similar tastes, it was easy for me to relinquish full control of the interior design once I saw what she had in mind, making me grateful that she’d even chosen to come along since her skills gave me one less thing to worry about.

Honestly, I was grateful that both of my parents had come on the trip since they’d each been helpful in different ways, with my mother knowing exactly what furniture pieces to pick out and my father jumping right in to build all that shit. And now, thanks to them, I was just about settled in, each area of my apartment making me smile for different reasons as Nala asked, “Okay, but where am I gonna sleep when I come visit you?”

“My mama bought an air mattress. You can sleep on that,” I told her, pointing the camera towards the deflated plastic that was still occupying a huge part of my living room floor. But when Nala asked, “Wait a minute. Is that what I think it is?” I instantly tensed up, frowning as I looked at my screen to see exactly what it was she was looking at before I, too, noticed the gold condom wrapper that was just slightly peeking out from underneath one of the mattress’s corners.

Picking it up off the ground, I was glad to discover it at least wasn’t empty. But when I realized it had very clearly been ripped from a roll of them, my eyes went wide as I asked, “Do you really think my parents…?”

Before I could even finish, Nala confirmed, “They definitely did.”

“Nah, man,” I responded, shaking my head in disbelief as I questioned, “I mean, I would’ve heard them, right?”

Like me, Nala shook her head. But it was for a different reason when she answered, “All parents know how to smash in silence. Trust me.”

“But he’s married! And she’s…”

“Getting revenge,” Nala finished for me, already cracking up about it as she said, “Your mother is a cold piece. And on an air mattress too?”

“I can’t believe them,” I groaned, only making Nala laugh harder when I whined, “This isn’t funny!”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“So stop laughing then,” I responded, watching as Nala’s eyes began to fill with tears as she tried her best to hold it in while explaining, “It’s just… the air mattress.”

To me, that only made it all more disgusting, leaving me furious as I grumbled, “Ugh. I cannotwaitto confront their asses about this shit when they get back. Like, who told them it was okay to be sneak humping in my brand-new apartment?!”

“You just mad they got to christen that bitch before you did,” Nala insisted with another laugh that had me rolling my eyes just as there was a knock on the door. And since it was easy for me to assume it was my parents finally returning with the food, I instantly put my game face on as I went to answer it while telling Nala, “That’s them now.”

“Oh my God, please don’t hang up,” she begged. “My soulneedsto hear this.”

I probably should’ve hung up. But I guess I was feeling just as messy as my damn parents, leaving Nala on the line as I sat my phone down so that I could open the door with one hand and hold the condom up with the other when I asked, “Are y’all…Lance?”

“Lance?!”Nala squealed somewhere in the distance, my eyes damn near bulging out of my head as I stared at the fine ass man standing in front of me. And because I was so shocked to see him, I didn’t even know what to say, stuck in a trance until I heard Nala asking,“Bri? Bri, what is happening? Bri!”

Moving to grab my phone, I told her, “Nala, I’ma call you back,” pressing end before she could ask any more questions since I had way too many of my own. But once I returned to the surprise guest who was still standing outside of my doorway, I found it hard to speak, forced to swallow hard so that I could finally ask, “Lance, what are you doing here?”

“Can I come in? Or were you expecting someone else?” he inquired with a glance down towards the condom that was still in my hand, embarrassing the hell out of me as I quickly responded, “Oh no. I mean, I was. My parents were supposed tobe… Just come in.”

When I opened the door a little wider for him to do so, it was ridiculous how easily he had me swooning just from the smell of him as he made his way past me. And even though it shouldn’t have mattered, I couldn’t help blushing a little bit after he looked around my space and complimented, “This is nice, Yani.”

“Thank you,” I replied, crossing my arms over my chest to hide my hardening nipples when I asked again, “So… what are you doing here?”

“I came to see you,” he answered before amending, “Ineededto see you.”

“But like, how did you even know where to come?”

Since we hadn’t really been in touch like that since the day I moved out of his house, I knew for a fact he hadn’t gotten the information from me. And since there were only a handful of people who even knew that I’d moved, I found myself listening intently as he explained, “Well the other day, I stopped by your Pops crib for the same reason, but ol’ girl told me you’d already left town. So then I asked her for your address, and thankfully she gave it to me so that I could make some plans to come see you.”

To be honest, hearing that Trinity had done something semi-nice was almost as surprising as Lance being here, both parts blowing my mind as I quietly asked, “You really flew all the way out here just to see me?”
