Then we got to work, with me rinsing the dishes and Kendall loading them into the dishwasher while also sneaking long glances my way that had my cheeks so damn warm and red Kendall called himself teasing me about it when he chuckled and asked, “Why you over there blushin’ so hard?”

“I don’t knowww,” I sighed, biting into my lip before I turned his way and admitted, “I guess I’m just really happy you came.”

“Yeah, I am too,” he responded with a smile. “And not just because the food was bomb.”

Smirking, I challenged, “You mean you didn’t totally hate my friends interrogating you?”

“Nah, I know they were just tryna look out for their girl, making sure I ain’t on no bullshit.”

Sure, that might’ve been a part of it. But in reality, I knew their intentions were a lot more basic than that, giggling as I told Kendall, “They were really just being nosy.”

“Either way, I get it.”

Not only did he get it, but he hadn’t backed down from anything they’d asked him, his open-book energy tempting me to get a few questions of my own answered. But knowing there would be time for that, I decided to keep things light instead when I dried my hands and asked, “You want some cake?”

Licking his lips, Kendall responded, “You gotta be more specific.” And for a second, I thought he was talking about something else until he clarified, “Like, what flavor cake?”

“Oh. Uh… there’s a pineapple upside down cake, and a…”

“Don’t even need to hear the other one,” he interrupted, making me giggle as I asked, “That’s your shit?”

Scraping his top teeth against his bottom lip just slightly, Kendall replied, “I mean, I’m sure you could make me a fan of whatever you made. But yeah, that’s my shit.”

The way he’d managed to slide a little compliment in there had me blushing yet again as I made my way towards the counter while telling him, “One slice of pineapple upside down cake coming right up.”

“Appreciate it, Shaky.”

“Stoppp,” I whined, the way he laughed in response letting me know that probably wasn’t the last time I’d be hearing that silly ass nickname. But to be honest, it got a little cuter every time he said it, leaving a smile on my face as I handed over his slice of cake and then anxiously awaited his opinion.

Wasting no time, Kendall used his fork to dig right in, hardly getting his first bite swallowed down before he groaned, “Got damn.Did you taste this?”

“Only every other time I’ve made it.”

“Nah, this one is special,” he insisted, reloading his fork before offering, “Here. Have some.”

I should’ve thought twice about eating after somebody I was really just getting to know. But I didn’t, instead maintaining full eye contact with Kendall as I took a step closer towards him, wet my lips, and then slowly opened my mouth so that he could feed me.

The cake was fuckin’ delicious.

But the way Kendall was looking at me,completely transfixed, with his fork still between my lips was what really had my attention, my heart rate increasing once he bit into his bottom lip and…

“Kiki, you in there?”

The familiar voice coming from the hallway was like a splash of cold water, snapping me out of the trance Kendall had me in as I quickly swallowed down my bite of cake so that I could respond, “Daddy! What are you doing here?”

“I can’t come visit my daughter now?” he asked once he’d rounded the corner. And while I was genuinely happy to see him, the circumstances had my nerves frazzled as I answered, “Of course you can. You just usually tell me first.”

“Well I wanted it to be a surprise this time,” he responded with a smirk. “Me and this.”

I hadn’t even noticed he was holding anything until he brought the tiny blue Tiffany’s box into my view, my eyes widening as I said, “I know that’s not what I think it is.”

“How about you open it and see,” he suggested as he handed it over. But then he looked past me and frowned a little, his expression reminding me why my nerves had been all jacked up to begin with.

I had company.

The kind of company I wasn’t exactly ready to introduce to my dad.

But unfortunately, I didn’t have much of a choice, trying my best to be cool about it when I sat the gift box down on the counter and announced, “Kendall, this is my dad, Stewart. Daddy, this is Kendall.”
