Hold up.

The other stuff was honestly just nonsense, so there wasn’t any real reason for me to get bent out of shape. But accusing me of throwing a game was crossing the line, my frown tightening as I tossed Gerald his phone back with a groaned, “They got me fucked up.”

“Oh shit,” Hawk chuckled, for whatever reason amused by my energy while Gerald’s nosy ass remained focused on all the wrong things according to his follow-up question.

“So does that mean y’allaren’tsmashin’, or…?”

Shaking my head, I answered, “Nah, man. I hardly even know that girl.”

“That don’t mean you couldn’t have fucked her.”

Technically, Gerald wasn’t wrong. And by the look on Hawk and Hunter’s faces, I could tell they were thinking the same thing, their cosign of Gerald’s logic making me even more eager to confirm, “I didn’t. Not that it’s any of your business if I would’ve.”

“You right. It ain’t,” Gerald agreed. “I mean, Ididthink we were all a family here, but…”

“Don’t even worry about this shit, Snoop,” Hawk interrupted. “It’ll blow over like it always does.”

“And, look. She even just left a comment telling the people she don’t fuck with you,” Gerald added casually as he turned his phone my way, the thought of her being so blunt about it bothering me a little until I saw what she’d actually said.

@KikiKnight: “I’m pretty sure I was just introducing myself to an unfamiliar face at my party, but go off lol”

That was the truth. And of course, she’d put it much nicer than Gerald had made it sound. But unfortunately, it didn't seem to matter to the people who were already beginning to respond nor to present company, Hunter chuckling as he said, “She cappin’ lowkey. Cause her ass wasdefinitelynot on no innocent introduction shit.”

“Nigga, you had an eyewitness account this entire time and ain’t say nothin’?” Gerald asked, while I defended, “Innocent or not, it was still an introduction.”

“Nah, y’all were well past that at this point,” Hunter insisted. “Matter of fact, this might’ve been when you got on your real playa shit and had her ass ready to bet the house on two.”

“Plot twist,” Hawk chirped, while Gerald leaned into the table and groaned, “Now wait a damn minute…”

Frowning, I turned towards Hunter who immediately asked, “Did you forget I was standing right there?” chuckling as he added, “Shit, I’m surprised I’m not in the picture too.”

“They probably Diddy cropped you, bro,” Gerald suggested before turning back my way to ask, “But why you out here lying for no reason, Snoop?”

“I didn’t lie,” I defended. “Just because Shakira and I might’ve flirted a little doesn’t mean I know her like that.”

“And yet you know her well enough to be callin’ her Shakira?” Hunter challenged, putting some unexpected heat on me that had me fumbling over what to say before I landed on, “This is really your fault. If you hadn’t dragged me to that party, none of this shit would’ve even happened.”

Sure, my actions were my own, and I took full responsibility for them. But it was a fact that I wouldn’t have even been in attendance -let alone the picture- had it not been for Hunter who, instead of owning his part, gave a little shrug as he groaned, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Keep that same energy when you’re writing your wedding vows in a few years.”

“A few years? I give it eighteen months tops,” Gerald wagered. “And there will more than likely be an unplanned fetus involved.”

“Come on, bruh,” I groaned, shaking my head as Gerald chuckled and argued, “I ain’t tryna speak it into existence or nothin’, I just know that look all too well. And if you're already giving it before you’ve even gotten a chance to sniff the pussy, ain’t no tellin’ how you’re gonna be acting once you finally do.”

“Nah, that’s facts,” Hawk agreed.

“Speaking of wedding vows, though. You and Lady Hawk set a date yet?”

For once, I was glad that Gerald was running his mouth, his change of subject finally taking the spotlight off of me and putting it on Hawk who was happy to talk about his impending nuptials. But unfortunately, my break didn’t last long, Hawk being the one to get a joke off at my expense when he asked, “So should I go ahead and put Kiki down as your plus one, or…?

Instead of answering, I just grinned and shook my head as proof that I wasn’t as bothered as I might’ve seemed before. But truthfully, the situation stayed on my mind for the rest of the day; through team meetings, and the rookie talent show, and even late into the evening when I found myself tempted to get on social media for the first time in weeks.

“A little peek for a couple minutes won’t hurt,”I decided as I redownloaded the Instagram app and then tried to log in twice with the wrong password. But thankfully, the third time was a charm, giving me the access I needed to scroll through an incomprehensible number of unread notifications until I found one related to the post of Shakira and me.

Now that I was alone, I could really examine the details of the picture. And to be honest, if I wasn’t the one getting fried for it, I would’ve thought we looked good together. But since Iwasthe one in the hot seat, I couldn’t really enjoy the candid photo for what it was, the comments humbling me once I discovered there were others talking about the same stuff that had stopped me in my tracks earlier.

“Yeah, her pops was definitely in his ear on that last play.”

“Nigga threw his whole season away for some pussy. And I feel him LMAO”
