My immediate assumption was that someone had caught us. And honestly, I was just waiting to hear who said person was so that I could decide what move to make next. But I quickly realized I was just being paranoid when I learned Kendall’s real reason for stopping in the hallway, a dimpled smile on his face once he turned my way to say, “I love you, Shaky.”

“I love you too,” I replied, releasing a relieved sigh as I watched him head for the staircase. And after checking myself in the mirror for a final time, I followed down after him, heading straight for the kitchen to get a sip of water that I was in the middle of gulping down when I heard Zara ask, “Kiki, where you been at? Your dad was looking all over for you.”

For as much thought as I’d put into an alibi, being put on the spot about it still had me fumbling over my words when I answered, “I was umm… I had to…”

“You and Snoop went upstairs to fuck, didn’t y’all?” Zara asked with a knowing smirk that made my cheeks hot as I moved closer towards her to harshly whisper, “How did you know?”

“I didn’t,” she responded with a chuckle. “I asked, and you just confirmed.”

Shit.

“Anyway,” I groaned, my eyes already beginning to scan the room as I told her, “Lemme go see what my dad wanted.”

But before I could actually locate him, Zara informed me, “He’s gone, Kiki. That’s why he was looking for you. To tell you he was leaving.”

“Leaving to go where?” I asked with a frown, expecting her to say something normal like the gas station, or the club, or even some woman’s house. But when Zara answered, “I think he said something about needing to get back to Vegas,” my frown instantly tightened with confusion until she added, “But Hawk was walking into the kitchen around the same time, so I might’ve misheard him cause I was too busy swooning.”

Knowing just how likely that was, I found myself a little less tense as I moved to a quieter room so that I could give my dad a call. And once he answered the phone with his usual“Hey, baby girl”greeting, I was able to relax even more when I responded, “Hey, Daddy. Where’d you go?”

“I’m on my way to the airport.”

What?

Just that easily, every bit of tension I originally felt was back as I asked him, “But I thought you were staying in Houston ‘til Sunday?”

“Yeah, that was the plan. But unfortunately, something came up that I gotta go handle,” he explained, continuing on to say, “I would’ve told you in person, but you were off somewhere with your lil’ boyfriend, probably being fast.”

When he added a chuckle, it did nothing to ease my worry. And even though something told me he wouldn’t give a truthful answer, I still had to ask, “Daddy, is everything alright?”

To his credit, my father did a great job making it sound like it was no big deal when he responded, “Yeah, there’s just been a lil’ misunderstanding that I need to go back home and sort out.” But it was the details of what he’d said that allowed me to challenge, “Alittlemisunderstanding, and yet it couldn’t be sorted out over the phone?”

“Nah, it's better for me to handle this in person.”

The way he was so obviously talking around his problem sounded way too familiar, making it easy for me to ask, “Does this have something to do with that Kellyn lady?”

And when he didn’t directly respond to the question, that was somehow an answer in itself, especially once he rushed me off the phone saying, “Look, Kiki. I gotta go. But I promise you we’ll talk about it later, okay? Go enjoy the party, and tell Snoop I said to do the same.”

“Yeah, okay,” I responded to no one since my dad had already ended the call by the time I was able to speak again. But even with how shaken our conversation had left me, I knew I had to pull myself together so that I could return to the party without drawing any extra attention to the situation.

And so that I wouldn’t worry Kendall.

He’d already dealt with enough over the past week and had even bigger shit lying ahead of him.

The last thing he needed was to be thinking about this too.

And once I made my way to the living room and saw just how much Kendall was enjoying himself on his special day, I decided that I wasn’t ever going to mention to him that this phone call with my father had even happened.

Not unless I absolutely had to.
